I managed to get hold of the original Model Engineer magazine from the librarian of the local Model Engineering Club (http://www.pnmec.org.nz).

Bradford van by Mr J. R . Harding of Sulton Coldfield .

A late entrant was the Steam Brake Novelty entered by Mr. J. R. Harding of Sutiton Coldfield. Because of the long lines of cars waiting to get into the grounds, Novelty could not join the line of engines under the trees and spent Sunday, the first day of the rally, shuttling between the various entrance gates and Mr. Hine's Showman's engines. It proved that at least one steam powered vehicle was capable of moving.

This Steam Brake is a conversion from a 1952 Jowett Bradford van. A vertical Merryweather boiler supplies steam to a two cylinder simple, open type launch engine. This is coupled to the original transmission by a Fenner timing belt drive. The water tank is at the rear and has a shaft driven feed pump.

What sound minded person would inflict such conversion on a poor little Braddy. I hate to think what all that extra weight has done to the steering, suspension and chassis.
I guess it dosen't matter about the brakes as with most steam engines you would just throw the engine into reverse to slow up and stop.

I had some difficulty picking up the file from Leo's site so downloaded and converted to pdf. Also added picture and text so that it can be searched and easily viewed without download.
