Javelin CWP

Post by Robin Fairservice »

I had the back cover of my rear axle so that I could seal it and stop an annoying leak. While the back was off I took a picture, and when I viewed it on my computer screen I could see that there were some numbers on the crown wheel, but couldn't read them. Does anyone know what they are?

Another question, did Volvo use that 2HA rear axle as well as Jowett?

Hello Robin,

I believe it is a 3Ha that Jowett used and a discussion has been taking place in the Jupiter section. Morgan used the 3HA throughout
50's. I can't comment on Volvlo. I have in a roundabout way contacted a Morgan agent and been told that the Jowett and Morgan 3HA's are not interchangeable, however Scott Renner tells me he has fitted one and it sits in front of him. That leaves us with an intriguing situation. I would love a 4.1:1 for my Jupiter to quieten her down a bit, but it seems extreme to send to Scott for one!!!

Unfortunately, everything that I have seen says that the 1950 Javelin rear axle was a 2 HA. I have a friend who specialises in rear axles and he agrees. The Jowett Owners Manual prepared by the club says that it is a 3HA-001-16, and then says talks of "The new type axle with an increased oil cpacity" There then follows a write up by some one who tried to put a later rear axle into a 1950 Javelin and found that the pinion was longer. The Manual quotes a Jowett part number of 54097, but the 1950 parts book says that the Jowett part number was 555.

I have now found another reference for the early rear axle, and that is on page 33 of the Jowett Owners Handbook, prepared by Bob Jones. That says that before EO/PB 10594, which includes my car, the rear axle was a Salisbury type HA24.

If you use the serach facilty on jowett.org (which searches the old jowettnet) with the word 'axle', you find many references but this one is definitive on page 30. http://jowett.org/jowettnet/dt/tech/jti/jav.pdf
You might find the 1951 parts list confusing as the assembly is 3HA but many of the parts 2HA

Note the the search facility does search pdfs!!!! I can easily add any 'legacy project' documents into the search so come on get them scanned in and loaded into the Gallery!!!!

I cannot find "The Jowett Owners Handbook" by going to Jowett.org as I seem to get comments about things being replaced by Jowett Gallery. As I commented I have issue #5, so the one that you linked me to has been superceded, and should be replaced by the latest version, and I think that it should reside in the Legacy section. All of our Technical informationshould be accessible in one place. It seems to be spread around at present.

Regarding rear axles, the 1950 unit was a HA-24, and this was replacee for 1951 by a HA-3.

Regarding scanning, that I have ben doing. My current project is a Maintenace Manual which had lost its front page, but refers to Series III engines, so I guess that was published in late 1952. If some one knows the correct date, could they let me know.

By the way, in the back there is a Jupiter supplement and the drawing of the steering column show pins to locate it! No Loctite mentioned!

Robin can you not view http://jowett.org/jowettnet/dt/tech/jti/jav.pdf ?
Or is that you cannot search http://keithclements.co.uk/search.aspx ?

Interesting about the pins. They are on the SA I think but not on the SC. Perhaps post the diagram? Note I have the manual allegedly covering the SC; but suspect it does not!

Note the early maintenance manual has much better detail than the later ones. Indeed in some sections the later one refers to diagrams in the early one that are not there in the later one. Proof reading was not that good! The section on diff overhaul is particularly good in the June 1950 version.

I can view the document when I click on that link, but first it is Revision 2 and somewhere there is a Revision 5, in a WORD format, because I once downloaded and printed it. I can't find it now.

If I wa a new,or non, member I would go to Jowett.org, and how would I fond the Technical information? I happen to nkow of jowett.net, so go there and then click on Technical. This is what I get:

"This section has been superseded by JowettGallery. All the service bulletins produced by Jowett are there- some pre-war, more Bradford and lots of Javelin.

A handy quick reference for Jup owners is the Motor Trader data sheet.

Call here as often as you can as more tips will be added, perhaps you could send some you have discovered?

The club has an officer who may be able to give help for side-valve and for overhead valve cars but please mail webmaster@jowett.org until we can get them on e-mail! I will attempt to get back to you. Please include your snail mail address and telephone number or fax in any query.

Here is the 1953 Javelin Instruction Book that came with the car. 2MB pdf, 54pages"

I go to Jowett Gallery, and then where should I, as a stranger, go to find technical information? How would I guess that "The Legacy" project is where I would find Technical information?

This collection of inter connected web sites needs to be sorted out so thatstrangers seeking informationhave a clear and easily followed pathway to follow.

I don't mean to be critical of all of the work thathas gone into the club's web site, but I thnik that strangers would easily be put off from finding valuable information.

The legacy project has the task of defining the filing structure for the documents. However, the existing Gallery filling structure is as shown when you click on 'expand' in the 'Explorer' view. The 'technical' section is where I suggest we file the handbooks under sub-albums for each type of Jowett with the 'all models' section being a catch all. Is that not the best way to file such documents? If you do not think so then, please suggest another structure.

The many years of accumulated Jowett artifacts on the web site do need to be copied into a reorganised structure. But they should never be deleted as links may exist to them where they are. So please trawl the site and say which ones need the treatment. http://jowett.org/jowettnet/ has an index of all the docs. Like many old things we may need to update (like copying reel to reel tape to 8 tracks to cassettes to CDs to MP3.)

Sure some artifacts may have been updated. Club members need to put the new ones into the Gallery, do not expect everything to be done by the webmaster! The fact that older versions have been on the website for many years is something to be proud of. If you search for 'jowett car club technical information' on Google you will find this doc. Whether we want that to be available without being a member of the club is debatable as this handbook was created by many members over many years. This doc was originally posted by Bob Jones on his website. At least by pulling it into the jowett.org site it was more accessible to surfers.

If you had loaded the manual (that you emailed me) into your personal gallery and commented that it was ready to be moved to the specified album (technical/all models) then the Curator (currently the Gallery Admin) could move to the correct place.

Alternatively (as you are part of the Legacy Project) the manual could be loaded into the Legacy space and commented on before final relocation.

Personally I think the work done by Mike Allfrey is 90% of what is required. We just need to keep updating that base document by commenting on JowettTalk or JowettGallery.
