Re: Jowett Annual Weekend, Daventry, May 2011
Jowett Car Club Annual International Rally: May 27- May 30, 2011.
The Midland Section invites you to join us at Staverton Park, Daventry in South Northamptonshire for ‘The Rose of the Shires Rally’
This Mid-Shires location has been chosen for its accessibility, welcoming hospitality, and modern en-suite accommodation. It is set in delightful landscaped grounds with excellent leisure facilities; including an 18-hole championship golf course, indoor pool, gymnasium, and sauna - and all this is central to a wealth of local visitor attractions. After a day of Jowetteering you can refresh your spirits in the lounge bars, heat up in the sauna and steam room, cool down in the pool, indulge yourself in the pamper rooms, or tee-off for a round of fresh air. Or just take advantage of the landscaped grounds and relax and sit a while: an opportunity to renew old acquaintances and make new friends.
Outline Programme:
Friday 27 May - Arrival and Registration, and collect Rally Pack: from 7pm, meet in the Brasserie for pre-dinner drinks, then at 8pm: Fork Buffet in the County Suite.
Saturday 28 May - after breakfast enjoy a 12-mile drive to The Motor Heritage Centre at Gaydon where we have the Main Arena reserved for our static display and Concours d’Elegance. Entrance to the stunning museum display is included with the Full Rally Pack. Return to Staverton Park and from 7pm meet in the Brasserie for pre-dinner drinks, then Dinner in the County Suite at 8pm.
Sunday 29 May - Scenic Run: 50 mile-drive around the county of ‘Squires and Spires’ with a coffee/lunch stop and an opportunity to visit Sulgrave Manor, the family home of the Washingtons. Return to Staverton Park and from 7pm meet in the Brasserie for a champagne reception followed by the Gala Dinner and Awards Presentations in the County Suite at 8pm.
Monday 30 May- last fond farewells and prepare for departure.
There is so much to do, you may want to extend your stay. We have negotiated an advantageous rate for those wishing to add extra nights either prior to May 27th or after May 29th. A Booking Form will be in the next edition of the Jowetteer or contact the co-ordinator for an e-version. We look forward to welcoming you to the Midlands for the 2011 Jowett Car Club Annual Rally.

Hello everyone,
In the September JOWETTEER there will be a Hotel Reservation Form and all the details regarding accommodation options, and tariffs etc. Already we have had a good response from the invitiation letter in the August JOWETTEER.
We have really worked hard to ensure the best value and you will note form the booking form that we have negotiated a 3 day package rate equal to the Biddeford event on 2009.
A seperate booking form for your JOWETT will be sent out in the November JOWETTEER.
Any queries please give me a call or email via JowettTalk. Email removed to protect identity!
Bye for now

“DAVENTRY CALLING, this is DAVENTRY CALLING…….”
It was not by accident that Daventry was chosen as the location for the 2011 National Rally. The Midland Section of The Jowett Car Club followed in the footsteps of another national institution, the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, in identifying a most central location and to….“Meet in the Middle…”
In 1925, two years after the formation of the Jowett Car Club, the newly created BBC constructed a broadcasting station on Borough Hill just outside of the Northamptonshire market town of Daventry, which was chosen because it provided ‘the most central location and the point of maximum contact with the land mass of the UK mainland’. The BBC staff working at the new broadcasting station at Borough Hill were affectionately known by the local residents as ”The Folks on the Hill …”
From 1932 the BBC Empire Service (now the BBC World Service) was broadcast from there. The distinctive BBC signature announcement of The Empire Radio and World Service Broadcasts…. “Daventry calling, this is Daventry calling” brought the town international fame and recognition.
In the early morning of Tuesday 26 February 1935 the radio station at Daventry (Borough Hill) was used for the first-ever practical demonstration of RDF [ Range and Direction Finding] by its inventor Robert Watson-Watt and Arnold Wilkins, who used a radio receiver installed in a Eccles Caravan Body on a Flatnose Morris Oxford chassis at Stowe Nine Churches (just off the A5 about three miles south of Weedon Bec and in the Daventry district) to receive signals bounced off a metal-clad Handley Page Heyford bomber flying across the radio transmissions. The interference picked up from the aircraft allowed its approximate navigational position to be estimated.
Prior to the outbreak of WWII the same acronym, RDF [Range and Direction Finding] was used but was re-defined as Radio Direction Finding. The word range was removed in order to conceal its ranging capability from unwanted listeners, such as foreign secret agents.
RDF later [1940] became known as RADAR [RAdio Detection And Ranging
The broadcasting station closed in 1992 and only one of the radio masts now remains. A busy directional radio beacon (VOR), identifier "DTY", for aircraft is situated approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) south of the town. The town also gives its name to the busy Daventry air traffic control sector.
75 Years to the day (26 February 2010) teams from the Coventry Amateur Radio Society & The Northampton Radio Club re-enacted the 'Daventry Experiment'. Signals from Borough Hill, reflected from aircraft flown by radio enthusiasts, were detected in a receiving set housed in a period Morris van which replicated the receiving station set up in the field that is the home to The Birth of RADAR.
DAVENTRY CALLING this is DAVENTRY CALLING will be our adopted call sign for updates and progress reports.
Keeping you posted.

Re: Jowett Annual Weekend, Daventry, May 2011
I'm a little perturbed that the rate for a single person coming to the 2010 Rally at Daventry, using the 3 day 'reduced rate package', is only £15 per day less than the price for a couple.
What's the reasoning behind this, or am I missing something?
Tony.

Re: Jowett Annual Weekend, Daventry, May 2011
Hello Tony,
Many thanks for your enquiry for the 2011 JCC Rally. We appreciate the query but in this instance we are governed by the Hotel's rates and have to say that the The Hotel does not actually have specific single occupancy rooms. We have tried extremely hard to negotiate the best possible rates for the overall 3 night package criteria and we think that we are offering best value to the majority of JCC Members' requests for the double occupancy rooms with rates, which are in fact, lower than Wakefield 2010 and at the same rate level as Biddeford 2009.
No, I don't believe that you have missed anything, and I hope that the above provides an appropriate explanation.
Regards
Craig Ainge

The answer could be to put up a "lonely hearts" post on here, somebody will share with you mate!Tony Fearn wrote:I'm a little perturbed that the rate for a single person coming to the 2010 Rally at Daventry, using the 3 day 'reduced rate package', is only £15 per day less than the price for a couple.

Joking aside, if anyone is going to the rally alone, hopefully members will be connected with others locally that they can travel and/or share with at the rally - could be a great way to spend a bit more time with other Jowetteers. I'm sure the organisers will help if anyone finds themselves in that position.
Jack.

Re: Jowett Annual Weekend, Daventry, May 2011
Thank you all for considering a most pragmatic solution.
If any member is travelling alone, perhaps JowettTalk could provide the medium for keeping a running register of those single members who could be interested in selective accommodation sharing; or if you prefer we will be pleased to keep the list.
I don't know quite how it would work in practical terms and we will be happy to take reservations in this manner and would ask the parties to liaise with each other and submit a single booking form with the wording Partner removed and substitued with ROOM MATE.
Keep us posted

Might I suggest they use the Private Messaging facility as we do not want rumours starting!
Looks like we may have a bidding war for who wants to sleep with Jack. Having been in the tent next to him at Goodwood I will pay good money to make sure he is not in the room next to me, let alone the next bed!

Synchronised with Gerald Palmer 100 year celebration
JOWETT CAR CLUB RALLY May 27th-30th 2011
“The Rose of the Shires Rally”
“DAVENTRY CALLING, this is DAVENTRY CALLING……all JOWETTS.”
RALLY UPDATE
Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Saturday 28th May 2011
Breaking News….. We are pleased to announce that after several weeks of discussions, we
have been instrumental in re-arranging the GP100 event to align with our Rally dates. GP100 is
an event to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Gerald Palmer, designer of cars such as the
Jowett Javelin, Wolseley 4/44, MG Z Magnette, and Riley Pathfinder.
In a long career, starting in commercial vehicles, Palmer was briefly involved with MG before
WWII, and afterwards at Jowett in the 1940s he developed all aspects of the innovative Javelin
design. http://www.gp100.org
The whole event will be a high profile motoring event and will attract international press coverage.
More details to follow .
Along with the Jowett Car Club CONCOURS d’elegance the Display in the main external arena,
there are a number of inside attractions –
MAIN GALLERY & MUSEUM COLLECTION – Over 200 exhibits covering 100 years or more
of motoring history along with a number of proto-types, experimental motors and world record
breakers.
THE TIME ROAD -
Select a significant year in your own personal history, a birthday, your wedding day etc…. then
stand on the TIME ROAD and be ‘transported’ back in time to that period and ‘experience’ the
motor cars, the fashions and events of that time.
LIFE’S HIGHWAY - Share the lifetime experiences of our four characters as they journey from
youth to old age. Archive Collection put together over several decades by motoring journalist and
past Jowett owner Nick Baldwin.
PERIOD CINEMA- Within the Gallery the ‘Bijou’ Cinema will show archive and more recent
JOWETT film footage at set times throughout the day.
The Conference Room- Where we have facilities for - The JOWETT JUNIORS stand;
JCC SECTION STANDS & DISPLAYS; The LEGACY PROJECT; The JOWETT SHOP;
TECHNICAL – SPARES; promotional materials for the 2012 JOWETT CAR CLUB NATIONAL
RALLY etc- all adjacent to Café.
At the time of writing, approaching 60% of the allocated accommodation is already pre-booked
at Staverton Park and we would encourage those who are yet to make their reservations to

GP100 CHANGE OF DATE TO 28TH MAY 2011
LATE MAY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND
Following recent discussions with The Jowett Car Club, it has been decided to run GP100, the Gerald Palmer Centenary gathering jointly with Jowett International 2011, a major gathering of the marque which is also scheduled to take place at the Heritage Motor Trust Museum, Gaydon. However, in order to combine the events, GP100 is being delayed by one week, changing the date to 28th May 2011, which is a bank holiday weekend. This will ensure that GP100 benefits from the maximum turn-out of Jowett Javelins, whose owners might otherwise have had difficulties attending separate events and the organisers’ aim is to assemble as many Palmer cars as possible to honour his achievement. The aim is for 100 cars in honour of Gerald Palmer' centenary.
At Gaydon, these two complementary gatherings will occupy matching areas to the left and right of the museum building entrance and will present a considerable spectacle to visitors. In addition to Gerald Palmer's cars, the displays will now include a full range of Jowett models and all the attractions planned for Jowett International too.
To quote Paul Batho, Chairman of the MG Car Club Magnette Register: "Thanks to the kind co-operation of the Jowett Car Club we can now offer our members and guests a major combined gathering of classic marques and a programme of attractions to match. What better tribute could there be to the considerable talents of Gerald Palmer, whose cars are still giving pleasure to a devoted following of owner enthusiasts?"
The GP100 programme at Gaydon will include:
• A display of the best examples of Palmer's cars
• Concours d'Elegance and Pride of Ownership competitions
• Club stands and specialist traders
• Car spares Bring & Buy
• A programme of speakers, including Christopher Balfour, Palmer's biographer and also some of Palmer’s colleagues at BMC.
The Jowett Car Club is offering a full programme of linked events over the weekend. For details, JCC can be contacted via http://www.jowett.net.
For all other Palmer owners, a similar full weekend programme will be available:
Friday 27th May
Co-ordinated scenic runs to the venue starting from points to the North, South-East and South-West. Arrivals and signing in followed by an evening BBQ.
Saturday 28th May
GP100 and Jowett International at the Heritage Motor Trust, Gaydon followed by a formal centenary dinner at which Celia Palmer, Gerald Palmer's daughter is planned to be Guest of Honour.
Sunday 29th May
A scenic run from Gaydon to Upton House, a stately home near Banbury owned by The National Trust . Informal lunch or picnic followed by final farewells.
The formal dinner will take place at Wroxall Abbey, a superb historic mansion venue near Warwick. (http://www.wroxall.com) For GP100 visitors who want to stay the whole weekend, Wroxall will also offer an accommodation package available exclusively from the MG Car Club Magnette Register. Camping will be available nearby.
