Gear box on eBay.
Could this be an early 30's type George (or anyone else)? I don't know what a Bradford gearbox should look like.

Re: Gear box on eBay.
It is similar to a CA or CB gearbox but I am sure that it is older. The rear seems to have something missing _ maybe the speedo drive, and the prob shaft coupling, if original, is definitely not Bradford

It is diferent Arabella's '34 box. Oil level/filler point is on the side of the box top cover - mine is down on the offside of the box body. The top cover is 'tall' - mine is almost flat.

Re: Gear box on eBay.
I've had another look at the photos and the whole thing seems to be rather worse for wear.
I agree with Paul that the 'back end' sems to be missing, and the rest of the ironwork, including the bearing looks rusted up.
Nevertheless, even though the top plate with gear lever seems to be rather loose, perhaps there's a gear set in wonderous condition within the box.
There again, the whole thing might just be scrap. It's a shame only two photos were posted.
When 1st gear on 'Dolly' my erstwhile 1927 long two gave up the ghost because the straight toothed gear looked more like comma teeth, and it jumped out of gear constantly, I had it sorted by a couple of Club members. The totat cost of the restoration, now some years ago was £248. There was never a breakdown of costs, but I expect the gear taken from another vintage box was quite a substantial part of the total cost.
So £10 (or so) for a set of gears for a three-speed ?very early thirties box isn't too much to pay to have on the shelf for the future. Just imagine comissioning one.
Is there anyone near to Wotten on Edge?
Tony.

Re: Gear box on eBay.
have been away so have only just seen this posting. It is undoubtedly a 1929 - 1932 3 speed box i.e. central ball change & sliding gears rather than the later 3 speed with double heliocal constant mesh gears. ) These are easily identified by the straight (vertical) sides of the trret rather than the curved sides on later boxes. IN other words the turret resembles the conning tower of a german rather than a british submarine!

Re: Gear box on eBay.
on furthur examination the back bearing housing is missing & the box is 1929-31 as 1932 boxes had filler/level plug on nearside

Re: Gear box on eBay.
Hi George. Would this box fit my 'spare' 35 engine and if so, would the starter mesh OK with my flywheel ? (I'm after a box purely to carry the starter - I am going to have the engine as a static display, probably on a trailer) Or do I need a '33 on box ?

Hi Ian - am fairly sure but not absolutely certain that it would fit. Also not sure how it would get on with the back bearing housing missing as the mainshaft would be all over the place so to speak and cant see in the pics whether or not the back gearbox mounting is present. As far as I am aware any of the double helical 3 or 4 speed boxes 1933 to CB bradford will fit your engine

Re: Gear box on eBay.
Thanks George. I suppose I could remove all the internals of the box. I am only interested because I shall be down in that neck of the woods soon for Beaulieu.

Re: Gear box on eBay.
I've bought this since I will be passing Cam on my way to Beaulieu and can collect it. If by any chance it doesn't fit I'll just clean it all up and 'shelf-it' (new word - just invented !) If it does fit I shall be after a starter next and of course a 'Y' exhaust pipe - oh and a manifold, oh and a carb ? . Now, if I can just get all of them for a tenner each ...........!!!

Re: Gear box on eBay.
Collected this on wayt back from Beaulieu. Upon arrival found the seller lived in Chapel Street at the junction with Rowley, where Dave Fox lived. Asked the seller if he had known Dave and he said 'Yes - the box came from him'. Not sure how he came to have the box ? - he is into Lister engines.
Anyway, it's now awaiting a good clean then I'll need to source a starter for it.
