Carbs

Post by paul wilks »

I have just contacted the Carburettor Exchange, 28f High Street, Leighton Buzzard, Beds re reconditioned carbs (as reported by Dave Morris some time ago). The good news is they have confirmed that they can still recondition them. The bad news is it will take 7 weeks because they are very busy. I realise that this is probably very reasonable but I am hoping to get my car to the ‘Jowett’ garage in Congleton (as mentioned by Tim in a recent Jowetteer) very soon but the car doesn't start well (I need too much of the Easy Start treatment and covers over the air intakes to get her to start) or run that well and I believe the carbs are to blame

So my question is: does anyone know of another source of carbs who might be able to give a faster turn round of a pair of carbs? I know this is just a long shot and I might just have to struggle with the starting etc as long as I can get her through an MOT.

Any advice would be welcome!

Thanks

Paul

Paul, talk to David Mason, there is a club member in Sowerby Bridge who has done some for David and it didn't take 7 weeks.

I am on the car collection team (Moving your car from Runcorn to Congleton), so I'd much rather it was not in too many pieces when we take it to Congleton :D

Hi Paul,

I had this problem for some years....used Easy Start but I found it better to toss a little petrol down each pipe. To this end, i carried a pint in one of those alloy camping bottles.......made for the purpose. It also saved me a possible fine when I ran out on the bike on a French Autoroute looking for fuel....73 miles without a sniff ! )

Since fitting a new electronic pump, cost about £40, she starts on the first touch of the button, after priming.
That might be a good option as well. I made a steel plate to go where the old pump was.
I'm going to have a couple of carbs done over the winter. It'll have to do for now.

Regards.

Thanks Ted and Alastair. I'll get in touch with David. You needn't worry, Alastair, the Javelin is a whole car! And thanks very much for being part of the trailer team. It is really appreciated.

That is rediculous....I have simple carbs like the draddy, and more complex like some of the jappa carbs turned around in 24 hrs...that includes dipping, rebuilding and re cadium plating.

On my Javelin the right hand carb has started squirting petrol out of the small holes above the float chamber. I have had the float chamber off and ensured that all holes are not blaocked, and similarly the emulsion piece. I have an old carb and compared them, but cannot see any reason for the flooding. The car starts and runs OK, but petrol going eberywhere scares me.

Any ideas as to my problem?

Float level?
Crap in the float fuel shut off valve?

Mechanical or electrical pump?
Take bowl off and press valve up lightly with finger. If electric switch on ignition and see if petrol leaks out, if mechanical, pump manually.
Check no petrol in float by shaking.
When taking bowl off see that petrol is not to top but about a third down.

Many thanks for your suggestions. I have removed the bowl and there was not a lot of petrol in it, but I removed the inlet valve and checked it. The pin seemed to be a little sticky, but the valve did not seem to be blocked. I had an old carb so I swapped the inlet valves. The old one looked different, but when I started the car, I didn't have petrol spirting out, so I think, and hope, that the problem has been cured.

Now a different question. Taking a closer look at my carburettors, I noticed that the driver's left carb has what appears to be a grease nipple screwed into the place where the manifold vacuum line goes on the right hand carb. Shouldn't this be an air tight plug?

It is a nipple for the vacuum advance or vacuum gauge. I doubt it has a grease nipple valve ball in it. So if you are not using it block it up!
Some people fitted them on both carbs (usually they are only on one) to use with a manometer or vacuum gauge to balance the carbs.

Thanks. I have replaced it with a brass plug. It does seem to have a ball in it so could have been letting some air in.

Another thing with usig old carbs...the butterfly bushes being worn...
Have the engine idle, use a little lpg or either and spray around the bushes wiggling them a little...and change in rpms means a inconsistant vac leak.....if there is a rpm change simply by wiggling the shaft....the carb is stuffed or needs rebuild and any tuning of carb, jets, timing etc is a total waste of time till fixed.

So much so a bradford with an extemely worn engine, so bad if a car follows it down a long hill, at the bottom their is no much oil smoke the car behind cant see and has to slow down....and has about 30lb compression.
Put a fully rebuilt carn on it, jet for modern octane..
The race across flats, up hills with a bradford with a brand new engine and worn carb, the worn engine keeps up very nicely with the new engine....over 50 miles....and the worn engine has a far slower and stable idle.

Suggest you try "the carburettor hospital" tel 01702203286 or carburettorhospital.co.uk. I had good service from them for fuel pump parts, good  website Bob lintott
