Re: Javelin sump.
Have you checked to see that the plugs are actually firing? A friend had a tester that he hooked around the plug lead and could check the voltage. Otherwise try a timing light, as there are timing marks on the flywheel for all of the cylinders.

Ted - This all keeps pointing in the direction of too much fuel being administered to one bank of the engine - did you mention that you are also getting smoke from the exhaust ?? - do the plugs look fouled / oiled / wet when you remove them ?? - and I believe that the poping within the exhaust is unburnt fuel that is burning outside of the chambers - I would strip the carb and inspect it in detail

Re: Javelin sump.
Thanks for all replies. Just got back and looged in.
Chris, my thoughts exactly...to the letter, plugs sparking ok against the block, Robin. When removed they are bright, clean and WET !
Fuel popping in the exhaust. Manifold getting hot because of this but not as hot as normal. Petrol, contaminated with soot from the exhaust dripping through exhaust flanges.
Keith, which part is the Vane ? It doesn't figure on the exploded drawing....or is it under some other name ?
When I put this latest bowl on, yesterday, I had to fit an emulsion block . I put back the one off the old bowl but I have several spares.

Re: Javelin sump.
Just had a friend round for a cuppa. he's got a mint 2CV two cylinders, lost spark, 1 carb....simples !
But we had a good look and came to the conclusion that the vane must be the little brass bit on the ' nozzle ' of the emulsion block' We came to this conclusion by digging out all my spare ones, 9 in all , and checking them out. Only 1 had this fitted.
So we've fitted that one to the car.
Before I took the bowl off, I was demonstrating it to him and actually pulling the offending plug leads off and sticking them back in made some difference to the running of the engine.
Taking the bowl off, I saw that it was fairly low on fuel for some reason. I took out the needle valve. It appeared to be stuck shut.
I changed it for a freer one. The fact that the engine was trying to run better while the flow of fuel was lessened would give me some hope that excess fuel is definitely the cause. We had No.4 running for a while after fitting the emulsion block with the ' vane ' there was also less smoke at the back end.
It was getting a bit hot by now, with no water pump on yet, so work abandoned until tomorrow !

Re: Javelin sump.
Well, took the plunge and fettled another carb from spare ones and she cleared her throat and gradually started to run on all four.......at long last. I will certainly get a couple rebuilt later in the year.
The smoke has largely cleared up, I guess the petrol in the exhaust has loosened a lot of soot and it'll take some time to be got out. It's not too bad to be anti-social, though.
Strobed it up and set the tickovers as best I could, given that the butterfly bushes are probably worn after almost 60 years.
Oil pressure max at 60psi and 20 on tickover. Water not up to the 70 mark.
Took her to a local ' intetresting ' car show yesterday with my biking mate in his flat twin.....2CV !
Fabulous day, hot and sunny, good grass surface and 60 or so cars on display from a '50 Chevy stepside pickup to a new Mini Cabrio........and a sectioned Porsche Carrera along the way. Mine was the second oldest there and got a lot of interest from the viewers. Could do with a Jupiter next year......Greg ??
So, thanks for all who gave advice. That's what this club's all about....friendly folk !
