Re: Another Javelin for sale
Hi Peter,
Great news that you have an arrival date for your new Javelin at Le Havre of 7th September!! I bet you can't wait until you get to pull open the doors of the shipping container!
Drummond Black has mentioned that we have another Club member in Switzerland. Just in case you havn't got a copy of the latest membership list, he is Dr. Heinz Luder, Chruzmatt 5, Buren Zum Hof, CH-3313 and a phone number of 0041-31-767-7547, when calling from the UK. I am not sure what model of Jowett he owns, but you might wish to contact him?
Peter, do let us know when you get to see your Javelin and we shall all be waiting to hear your news! Are you planning to take her back from Le Havre to your home in Switzerland on a trailer?
All the best,
David

Re: Another Javelin for sale
Hello Peter,
Heinz has a splendid Javelin, we often see it at or national rallies.
You asked a question some while ago about an SC. No one answered so I will try.
After the war Jowetts had passenger cars, commercial vehicles and sports cars. They needed a simple identification scheme. Which took into account the year of manufacture, the type of vehicle and the model within the type group. You will see your Javelin has a chassis number E0/PB/9622.
E is the fifth decade and all jowetts were made loosley speaking between 1910 and 1954. But this scheme only came into being after the war.
The 0 of E0 is a numerical zero. thus if you put them together 50 and prefix it with the obligatory 19. Your car was made in 1950
P tells us it was a passenger vehical and the B says a model B, Now I believe for example when the PB's came out and I am expecting a possible deluge of complaints, but I think with the PB you could choose a deluxe or standard version to your car (deluxe has leather seats standard rexine or plastic) there were other differences too.
1950 Passenger Model B and then 9622 says your Javelin was the nine thousand six hundred and twenty second Javelin Made.
D7 CA 1007
1947 commercial vehicle model A the 1007th made. The purists will probably say the 1007th was made in 1946 but you get the principle.
SC referred to Sports Model C, SC's were virtually all made in 1953 so Keith did not need to tell us what he was talking about. Most of us know by following a massive topic on this forum that Keith/Amy (his daughter) own this Jupiter and Keith has an SA (Sports model A)
I think Keiths idea was to visit you with this newly restored vehicle. Amy may have other ideas as she and Jack (partner)have just got it on the road after being off the road for 20+ years and they were both highley delighted to have won awards for the project at the recent rally.
I'm sorry if this is too difficult and will with others help try to make it simpler if you do not understand. My German is non existant, there are those who thing my English poor, but at least I tried to answer your question

Re: Another Javelin for sale
Hi Peter,
Thanks for your post about the trailer. I am glad you have made contact with Heinz. It is clearly a long way to go to collect your baby from Le Havre, so you deserve a really good meal and at least a bottle of wine when you get there...and no, I'am not too old either!! I shall be thinking of you on that date and hoping that the Javelin lives up to all your expectations! It will be fantastic to be throwing open the doors of the shipping container for the first time!
Alastair has given an excellent description of Jowett's dating/serialisation system. The only thing I can add to the comments about SC Jupiters is that they have an external boot lid and a metal dashboard with two centralised large dials, I think for the speedo and rev counter? Between them were the minor instruments. Confusingly, I believe the SC Jupiters were also known as Mk.1a Jupiters, but as I am not in any way a Jupiter expert, I will probably be corrected!! However, I don't believe there was ever a SB Jupiter?
All the best,
David

Re: Another Javelin for sale
Hi Alastair, intriguing, if you can dig out some info about these I'm sure many will be interested. Worth starting up a new thread with info for possible searches in future (and to keep Peter's thread on track!) and if possible we could add some photos.Alastair Gregg wrote:Not commonly known, but there were a couple denoted as SB, if you are interested I can find out the numbers
None of the websites out there, Wikipedia, Edmund's site, or others I've seen, have reference to SB models, so would be good to have a bit more info in the public domain - especially of interest as we have SA and SC in the garage, and had always assumed no SB in the middle!
Jack.

Re: Another Javelin for sale
According to Ed's excellent book, 'The Jowett Jupiter - the car that leaped to fame', the Mk 1A prototype, HKW 197, E1/SA/560, was designated SB. He describes it as 'the only SB Jupiter' and believed scrapped apart from it's bonnet

Re: Another Javelin for sale
I currently have some of Ed's books (source documents) and clearly also as well as E1 SB 560R have E1 SB 175R and E1 SB 177R down as SB and they were reviewed as late as August last year by Ed himself as factually correct.
"We know that “SB” = “SAL” and some early LHD Jupiters had SB instead of SAL in the factory records – but not necessarily on the Brass Plate!" Is quoted with reference to E1 SB 175 by Ed.
New data is becoming available all the time
E1 SB 560R has been scrapped. Confirmed
I am starting this as a new topic in Jupiter for those interested as Jack requests http://jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1611
