Nut torque settings

Post by kemp1942 »

Help ! - I am currently changing back to my original engine - does anyone have the torque settings for the following:

Crankshaft/flywheel nut, Cylinders/crankcase nuts, Cylinder head nuts ?

I have searched all my Jowett Cars booklets, my Pitmans, The online 'Newnes Motor Manual' and also the Jowetteer Index on Jowett.org but can't find any mention of torque settings !

Thanks in anticipation.

many years aago in the days when scrapyard jowett spares were plentiful I conducted some experiments to try to establish a reasonable torque figure for cyl head & cyl base nuts. I found on a number of pots that the studs snapped at around 45ft lb so settled for 40 ft lb;, same for base nuts. 35 ft lb may be a safer bet now taking into account age of castings etc etc.

The flywheel nut needs to be very tight & I used a 3ft bar on a box spanner - no idea what the actual torque figure was.

7hp cylinder head nuts and torque

Post by Tony Fearn »

Hi Ian and George.

They could have done with George in the pre-war experimental department at Jowetts in the thirties!

I've never put a torque wrench to 'Mary Ellen' just ordinary spanners. Flat washers on the base nuts and no washers on the cylinder head. It's a good idea to check the tightness periodically.

One thing to watch though is the state of the cylinder head nuts. After a few offs and ons, or even after the first time they're taken off, it's quite obvious if closely inspected that the base of the nut splays considerably.
This has a bearing on how tight you can do them up subsequently. The pre-used ones are more likely to strip if tightened excessively.

The answer is to buy new ones from Jowett Car Spares Ltd.. It saves time and effort in the long run, and the old ones can be used on the exhaust manifold.

Of course they need nipping up when the engine's hot.

As for the flywheel, George is spot on as usual, although I don't remember using such a large tommy bar!

Roy Braddock suggested the use of a radiator-type sealant after messing about with cylinder heads, manifolds etc.

Tony.

Cheers chaps - flywheel and clutch assy on, timing checked/set. Can't do any more till I order head gaskets from JCS next week - dont want to be fitting them after the engine is back in.

Remember the 'initials on engines' discussion some time back, Tony. As I said at the time, mine is HH - Harry Holmes, but on the rear bearing cover I see 'KK' stamped. Any idea ??
