The story of the rebuild of Napoleon, Amy's SC Jupiter, that started in 1980 and finished (almost) in 2010 when it won Classic Car of the Year.

Door crack welded up this evening. Jack came around and finished laying the boot aluminium.
This enabled the rear section to be replaced thus freeing up some floor space for the weekend party!

Still need to add some support to where the crack emanated. Poor Jowett construction again!

An incredibly successful day today! :)

Chris Spencer had somehow been duped by dad into coming along to help - and despite his protestations that his experience in bodywork was "a long time ago" nonetheless proved wonderfully adept at tweaking and fettling (and banging...) the rear end into alignment. There was much riveting and grinding being done by Jack, along with the comedy injury of the restoration to date (I'll let him tell you all about that at the Rally though;))

Dad will no doubt be along with photos soon - the rear end is looking rather fine after 9 or so hours of detailed attention.

Thanks once again Chris, your expertise was very much appreciated. Let us know when we can return the favour on your 8 :)

We've also fitted both doors, which had been finished off this week and earlier today by dad and Chris - both need aligning (the doors, not the blokes), but it was lovely to see the car with both doors in place. He's starting to look like a proper car now - it's almost possible to believe that he could actually be driveable in two months' time....

That's probably the after-effects of whatever dad slipped you to get you to spend so many hours chez Clements

Car is a he, yes - Napolean (to go with Josephine, dad's Jupe).

Hello Amy,

Sure you didn't sip Chris's drink?

I'll bet Napoleon wondered who that Napolean was that was bothering with his wife.

Tony.

Door latch

Post by Forumadmin »

Napoleon's rear end was well and truly banged and yesterday it was his middle as I tried to get enough space to fit the door. It is 2mm too tight at the top. The progress was halted because the door lock mechanism is severly worn on the driver's side. It really needs a 'new' one. Has anyone a spare or knows of an equivalent?

I have dismantled it and found it badly worn on every contact point of which there are at least a dozen. I started welding each one; but it will probably take a week of machining to restore it.

Speaking with John Blanckley in Italy he suggested using a JAvelin mechanism. So down to the garage and dug out a very rusty door and with much difficulty with impact drivers and cut-off tool remoed door opener mechanism. See pictures of differences and wear; but most can be used,

I clicked on the link to your lock pictures, and eventually got to Jowett Gallery where Iwas required to log in. That took me to my section, and Ihad to go back and find yours. Now I didn't know where to look for your pictures!

Jack was around again tonight whilst Amy was demolishing a bathroom. Jack continued work on the battery box whilst I completed transforming a Javelin door mechanism to a Jupiter one. Welded a striker plate strengthening bar and welded up the worn Jupiter actuator. All the rest came from the Javelin. Just need to find some 4.6mm (0.183inch) diam rivets. I may just aly weld the old ones!

Jack started fitting the panel behind the seat, whilst Amy continued removing paint with the special scourer that cost her £13.

Chris did the rub down of the spraying I did on the fascia and then gave it another good coating of primer/filler. I took the switches off the panel and prepared for spraying. I also prepared the battery cables and fitted to Jack's brilliant new battery box. I am resisting putting a picture on here because he wants to show you it at Wakefield.
