CB Handbook

Post by Chris Spencer »

I have just been given a CB handbook by someone who knew I had a interest, ablit it is rather tatty but I am always amazed when you find that the original vehicle owner has made a number of entries that detail the life of the vehicle - Apperantly new in March 1949 - registered 'JO 4461' to a garden centre in Newbury - it was supplied by the local Jowett agent of 'Wincup & Green' of West Street, Newbury. Berkshire. The service history is covered up to the end of 1953 by which time it had travelled 42,000 miles. At 30,100 miles (08/07/52) the engine was fully rebuilt for which he has detailed a full breakdown of costs - being charged £32 labour and £64,18 shillings in total (NO VAT in those days) with all parts and machining costs appears to be such loose change by todays costs. Unfortunatly the vans last trip witnessed was to a local scrapyard so unless someone knows better the vehicle is no longer arround to be reunited with the book.

Keith - If I find time I shall scan it in this weekend - the guy who gave me the book is also trying to find a couple of pictures that he took of the van in question - if obtained I shall attempt to scan those in too but not having scaned anything to the gallery yet do not hold your breath !

30,000 miles before a complete engine rebuild seems very little by Jowett standards. I thought it only applied to things like ford 8s & 10's!
