My 1938 8hp is very noisy when driving. I've checked the exhaust and that appears to be OK. But I am hearing a lot of resonance and noise coming from the engine when sat at the wheel.
I have to say, this problem is now starting to worry me. I don't want to have hearing problems later in life caused by the noise.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the noise and make driving my car more enjoyable?

a fairly long shot without hearing it - check the hydraulic engine mountings for broken springs - if a spring has gone the engine will sit down hard on one side of the chassis instead of rocking slightly on the mountings. The easy way to check is to compare both mountings which should be of the same hight./ there should be a washer under the nearside mounting only.

noise
Hi Paul.
Are the welds holding the manifold flanges to the Y-pipe ok, and are the flanges tightly bolted to the cylinders?
Tony.

on the same lines the 8hp has a cast elbow rather than just a flange connecting the Y pipe to each of the pots. The exhaust pipes are a tight push fit into the elbows & have been known to drop down a bit resulting in considerable noise

Thanks guy's.
I am going to be replacing the gaskets on the manifold in a couple of weeks, these are leaking slightly. When this has been done I'll make sure that the nut's which hold the flanges onto the manifold are tight.
I'll also check the engine.
I've noticed how the noise is louder when accelerating, and it is considerably less noisy, when driving at slower speeds.
My guess is; it's those exhaust gaskets which are to blame.
I've been promised some new gaskets on Sunday from one of our members who is joining us for the day in Lincoln.
I will replace them the following week end, and see what she sounds like.
In the mean time, I'll take some cotton wool for my ears for my journey up to Lincoln on Friday.

Well I am now very happy
I've cured the noise from my car. It turns out that there was a fracture in one of the welds that secure the front pipe to the manifold.
I had this re-welded and put the exhaust back together, last Sunday using new gasket's; kindly donated to me by Mike Fishwick, and I also used Fire Putty.
I took her out this morning to test my new Speedo Clock and to also test the exhaust system.
The car is running very quietly compared to the noise I had over the Summer. And I now have a working Speedometer, thanks to Paul Beaumont.
