JOWETT RALLY 2009 BIDEFORD

Post by Tony Fearn »

Here we go, here we go, here we go!! -di da da, di da da, di da da dum.

Just in case Jowetteers from the cooler U.K. latitudes need a stop-over on the way down to Bideford in Devon for the 2009 Rally, and would like to meet up with other intrepid travellers and spend a night in extremely good company (mind you, most of them will have come from Yorkshire), then send me a PM and I'll tell you where we'll be on the night of Wednesday the 20th May.

Bob Gray has booked us in, after we decided to have an extra day at the Durrant House Hotel at Bideford on Thursday 21 May before the Rally weekend which starts on the Friday, to try to miss the bulk of the Bank Holiday traffic. He's already booked seven rooms, so it's not only me and him that will be there! - (separate rooms of course).

There's probably about 150 miles to go on the following day.

You might just have looked at the website of the Jowett Car Club of Australia's New South Wales Section's epic crossing from West to East (about 4000 miles) by three Badfords -'WAIT', 'AND', and 'SEE'.

If you have, then a trip to Bideford wherever you are in the U.K. should be 'easy peasy'!!

Shall we see you in Longford??

Tony.

Do you know I almost feel like going North just to come back South to Bideford with all of you so I don't miss out on all the excitement! It will only be a measly 100 miles for me this time!

Jowett Rally 2009

Post by Drummond Black »

Ken, its a drop in the ocean compared to the mileages travelled to the Australian Rally in Bendigo. Tops was a Bradford that travelled 3,322 Kilometres ( Convert it if you wish but its still a lot ).

We have only 488 miles from Kirkliston to Bideford. Might stop for a coffee ??

BIDEFORD

Post by Drummond Black »

Tony, Just thought it might be advantagous to keep BIDEFORD at the top of the listing. Jupiter just sailed through its MOT, so nearly ready for the off in under two weeks.
See you all at Longford on the 20th May.

Not long to go now, before 'Sarah Jane' and I come down to 'Devon, Glorious Devon'.

Gearbox and back axle oil levels checked.
Engine oil changed.
Plugs and points cleaned and checked.
Lights and indicators ok.
All nipples greased.
Radiator pipes checked.
Prop shaft bolts tightened.
Oil filler cap and petrol pipes Brasso'd.
Carpets brushed.
Brakes tightened -- and I hope they will arrest her on the 'gradients' rather than the 'hills' to paraphrase Geoff Wills' Rally items in the May Jowetteer.
Tools, spare petrol and oil on board, as well as the wherewithall to change a tyre remembering the problems another of the Pre-War Gang had on the trip to and from Crieff last year.
Wooden stick present, calibrated in gallons because the petrol gauge isn't working.

Just need to work out the volume of space needed for a suitcase and a folding chair in the dickey seat area.

Have cleaned the wheels and brake drums, and now only need to wash and polish the outside, and hoping for a dry run down. I refuse to do it all again if it decides to precipitate, although if I remember I will bring a wash-leather to do the outside.

The get together at the Longford Premier Travel Inn on the Wednesday evening should be 'interesting' to say the least if Galashiels last year is anything to go by.

So, see you there, all being well.

Don't forget the National Jowett Weekend at Bideford starts a week today.

I have a friend who thought he still had a couple of weeks to prepare!!

Tony.

Weather forecast for Bideford

Post by Alastair Gregg »

Long term forecast could be a lot worse, it is suggesting that the precipitation will be available on the Wednesday and Friday:-

http://www.accuweather.com/ukie/forecas ... P&metric=1

But Sunday and Monday will be pleasant, However the crew that do this web site change their minds like their socks.

This bunch only do a ten day but all looks well (as far as ten days goes):-

Finally the Met office:-

Leaves me thinking I shan't be able to fit all the clothes I need and Tonys list in the Jupiter never mind my passenger his stuff and a box I am supposed to deliver to a family member in Ilfracoombe.

Anyone got a shoe horn?
Compliments of the Season,

Not a transporter load this time, hopefully a new Bradford Van but if it is not ready it will be the Kestrel.
I had a visit from Bill and Sandra Purves this morning in their Bradford they are well on the way to the rally, tonight they are hoping to stop somewhere between Monmouth and Chepstow

Jenny polished the Jup between showers yesterday whilst I finally fixed a prop vibration with a second Terry clip positioned next to the existing one. Having jacked up and taken the rear wheels off, slowly reved the engine up to 75mph and checked vibration level. Then moved clip through 180deg, checked level again. Did the same at 90 and 270 deg. Then moved clip to opposite where greatest vibration, adjusted a bit to account for any difference between the readings at 90deg either side. Then as it was still not perfect added extra clip and adjusted till at its lowest. Also fixed oil leak on swaged oil pipe by cutting swaged cylinder off and fixing Terry clip.

This was after having wheels balanced. They were found to be over 100g out in most cases. Shows that you need to regularly balance wheels. Mind you these had done the rally in the Sahara! Had to change from the standard whells as they were showing cracks.

See you Friday.
