One alternative method of obtaining the info you require would be to use Google. It looks like a Smiths gauge (check the dial), and so the instrument model number will be printed on the dial just above the odometer. Google "Smiths X.YYYY/ZZ Speedometer", and see what comes up.

Just to show I watch other Jowett Talk areas apart from the Pre-war, I notice that the bracket supporting the steering column through the dahboard on the Weasel is totally different to mine.

OK, so it is a few years younger, but . . .

On vareful examination I am sure mine is not 'right'.

It is an aluminium casting with a clamp bolt to grip the column and TWO fixing bolts to the dashboard, both at the top of the bracket.

Also it is curved and the angle of the fixing bolts is about 45 degrees to the upright dash panel.

Is the one just visible in the Weasel picture typical of the type? Were the 1930ish ones very different?

If so, does anyone have a spare or a drawing?

As always . . .

steering column dash support.

Hi Ian.

The mid thirties cars had the steering column dash support as in the picture of the 'Weasel' that Chris has copied into his post about speedos from my Bingley photos in the Gallery.

There are a couple of other photos (in the same album) of earlier cars which may be of help.

I think the one you describe for your own car sounds to be original.

Are you coming to Bideford? If so, bring your camera and a couple of spare batteries. You might get some answers for the 'detail devil'.

Regards,

Tony.

Tony (et al): -

I regret that it is unlikely that I will come to the Bideford 'Show', but I may go to other shows nearer home and I usually take a camera 'in case'.

I will try to get some photos of my bracket (well the car's actually) but it just does not 'feel' right somehow.

The angles are all wrong and the casting sounds expensive compared with a fabricated component.

I am tackloing the front end of the bodywork at present, new dashboard support, door front pillars and top crossbar.

I have just bought new glass - laminated, cut to size and shape - for the windscreen. (Sorry, can't do it while you wait - tomorrow OK?

WHAT A SURPRISE!

It cost just £19.22 inc VAT.

Try that on your modern small car!
