I have been doing some ping test to jowett.org (you do this by selecting run, typing cmd (enter) which opens up a DOS window (joy)
Type in 'ping jowett.org' and the utility fires some short requests to jowett.org to which it replies. The round trip time should be somewhere between 10 and 30 ms on a good Broadband connection in the UK.

Now occasionaly I get 'Request timed out' which suggests the site is not responding within the default time of 1 second.

http://www.ss64.com/nt/ping.html

A time of 10 milliseconds is roughly equal to a distance of 930 Miles, travelling a straight line route at the speed of light. Much of the delay is in the software and hardware of the network equipment between you and the website.

Use DOS command 'tracert jowett.org' to see where your ping is going. I have 14 hops to jowett.org, 11 of those are to get out of my ISP's network. Note that ping and traceroute to keithclements.co.uk aborts because I block ping at the firewall.
Traceroute tries 3 times on each link so you can get an average ping between each hop.

http://www.more.net/technical/pingtrace.html

You may also like to test and fix your MTU setting. This is a bit dangerous so I attach this health warning.

What is interesting?? about the next set is the long time it took in the first test from US. But when repeated in the last test it was OK. Thus pointing to the database server delay. I am investigating what might cause the delay from redirect to first byte being received. This might be due to cache delivering the page quicker the second time around so I need to eliminate that.

Which suggests the php does the posting but then times out when trying to deliver the response page. It may not be the database server, but the php web server slicing the delivery in two with a delay in between.

One way to be sure would be to write some code to deliver a number of pages in succession, some with DB access the others without. But I have not got time to do that!

Here are some results on the Gallery with one at the end on the forum. First one bad which suggests a scheduling/cache issue.

Reckon it is the php simply closing the session and saying go away. Not sure how or why it does that. It is supposed to have about 3 seconds max program time; but perhaps it shortens that if it gets busy. Or simply drops the lot out of the queue.

Support ticket raised on hosting provider. I live in hope!
