Steering wheel nut

Post by TedAllen »

Can anyone tell me the size / type of thread for the nut at the top of the column on a PD with splined wheel. I lost mine during a rebuild about 10 years ago and I think it's time I fitted one.

Steering Wheel Nut

Post by David Morris »

Hi Ted,

I have dug out a splined shaft and John Airey has very kindly measured it up.

It is missing it's nut, but John's measurements give the thread on the shaft as 11/16 B.S.F. (14 T.P.I.), which was introduced at E2/PD 20881.

Standard Javelins had to manage with the keyed shaft for a bit longer, until they too went over to the splined shaft eventually.

Hope this is useful.

All the best,

David

Thanks for that, David, I know how old the car is but not too sure about the column. I'll see if my nut and bolt man has one. we have an ongoing challenge, I'm winning so far, I have beaten him with Thackray washers, Oddie nuts and last week, 3/16 BSF locknuts. If he's got the big nut it will only be 10p and his honour will be satisfied a little.
