Jupiter: new 4.11:1 crown wheel and pinion

Post by garthwright »

Have recently had a professional rebuild of rear axle using above 4.11 ratio gears from the batch made by JOAC some while back. On driving there is a very prominent whine on the overrun - perfectly OK on drive but very apparent immediately load is off.
Rebuilders have agreed to have another go at setting the pinion, but talking with Ed Nankivell he had similar problem which took 3 goes to get it 'acceptable' - his rebuilder advises it was just finding the right compromise.
Any other experience or advice for me to pass on before I send it in for a 2nd setting ?

My JOAC 4.1:1 cwp set

Post by Edmund Nankivell »

My JOAC 4.1:1 rear axle is acceptable now (3rd build). On the over-run when reducing from about 50mph to about 30mph one can hear it, but it is faint and below all the other noises! I am pleased with the new ratio. I also have overdrive and 15in wheels on this Jupiter, and the 4.1:1 compensates for the wheels giving a true third gear, a true top gear and a true O/D top. Edmund.
