On the fixed head vintage engine.
Inside the timing cover is a weir, so when the oil level fills to a certain level, the oil returns to the main sump. But this weir is an inch above the starting handle shaft. So we always leak a small amount of oil each time we park up, through the starting handle bush. The starting handle is well oiled which is great. We are thinking of fitting an oil lip seal , but wondered first if we are missing a trick? Does anyone else have this problem?

I removed the crank handle, split pin, washer, spring and second washer and fitted a tight fitting 1/4 thick 50mm diameter felt washer, then reassembled in reverse order. It has slowed the leak on my engine to a manageable level. (My guideline, is "will the landlord at the pub notice the oil on the car park") I think the correct way to solve it, is to re-engineer the shaft and timing cover and return it to factory dimensions, not the heavily worn state after 90 year use.
