I have removed my car's engine & gearbox using a people hoist. These are a lot better than an engine crane as the wheels are better & the lift mechanism smooth as silk: the price is also better as you can pick them up for free.
Either my interpretation of the engine stand plans was wrong or there is an error in the plans.
I needed to modify the front brackets , otherwise everything went smoothly.

Neat idea... the people hoist. But I always just roll the car back or pull out horizontally, then use a hoist on the cross beam of the roof to put on the engine stand.

People hoist is great. I put a block of wood under the sump and lift it with a trolley jack. Slide it onto the front cross member tube, move the jack to the front, slide it forward onto the jack again and wheel it out.
It helps if you have a friend so you can have one on each side. I think our (me and friend) record was about 20mins from getting the car in the garage to getting the Jupiter engine on the floor.
The Javelin was even quicker; we had that down to under 15mins, but to be honest that engine came out almost every week for a few months.
The usual procedure for the Javelin was: Blow it up during the week and get a tow home on Friday, drop the engine out before going to the pub, rebuild on Saturday, throw it back in Sunday and drive 100 miles to Newcastle on Sunday night for a hot date. Blow it up again during the week, call Green Flag on Friday, get a tow home and repeat. Happy days.
We once did a VW beetle engine out in under half an hour, if we had known where some of the hidden bolts where it would have been even quicker, it wasn’t a pretty sight, but again we had to get to the pub. Second hand piston and liner from a local scrapyard fitted on Saturday, engine back in the car for Sunday.
The health and safety executive were not present, or consulted, for obvious reasons!
