Universal Joints such as Hardy Spicer should not be used at the ends of a shaft used to connect two other shafts and those two shafts are not parallel. Since in Jav and Jup the engine and gearbox are at 7.5 Deg to the horizontal a Layrub is required.
why U J cannot be used.

Hi All, the data sheets for layrub couplings ( See Howden's of Stroud for data ) demonstrate how close to the operating limits we are! They recommend 8 degrees as a maximum for momentary 'out of plunb' running, so with 7.5 degrees we are very near the limit, especially with the rear axle on full downwards depression, which must exceed this? Not sure if this is still the case, but Howden's used to sell individual bobbins, if you want to recondition your own. With winter coming soon, now would be a good time to have an inspection!
All the best,
David
