This is VERY helpful. I suspect I have tainted the clutch with gear oil. I used the proper heavy lube, but I still do not know how much to put in. I used a dip stick, but not sure where to measure from (the very deepest part or the upper part?). I think I now know; less is probably appropriate. I
I will try some fullers earth and adjust as recommended. I hope it gets it good enough for a while I need to leave the car alone and drive it until end of 2025 when I can pull it all out and rewind some rope on the clutch. I see no way of removing the clutch without pulling the engine. I have to hold off doing so on that until at least a year from now. Long story... But I can't do it until next winter.

The correct level of oil in the gearbox is 2 inches on a dipstick. I made one out of a thin but firm piece of wire, painted the bottom two inches in a matt colour. You can carefully poke it down the breather tube which is visible on the gearbox top cover, making sure it actually touches the bottom. It is difficult to assess as the wire invariably touches a cog or something on its way down, but try several times and you'll hopefully see the level.

Perfect! Thanks again. I use a bicycle spoke. I just needed to know which level of the casing to stop. Using the vent hole makes sense. That way the location to go straight down is well defined. I was using the uncapped filler hole and it hits a shallower area. I filled to two inches form there. That has to be too much. The car is settled in for the winter now. So this will be an early spring session to get it back on the road.
