Gearbox strip down

Post by Tonyb57 »

Can anyone supply me with a copy of page 50 of the javelin manual, I've read the excellent strip down article by harry Brierly and rex Emerson, but they refer to page 50 of the manual, but I don't have it, I've got the gearbox on the bench, I'm trying to understand what the problem could be, I actually have two javelin boxes, one is a 5000 number the other is a 6000 number, both struggle to select gears hence the stripdown

Tony,
The numbers that appear on the box as part of the casting are related to part numbers and are not particularly useful. The gearbox number is stamped into the aluminium. A number beginning with J is a Jowett box. If this is not accompanied by another number prefixed R then it has never been overhauled by Jowett and may therefore still have the problems that blighted these boxes. Proceed with care. Your early car would not have had a Jowett box originally.

Thanks, I'm aware the two boxes I have are Jowett boxes , one is a 5000 number and the other 6000, both are suffering from gear selection issues, are meadows boxes available or are they like hens teeth, I know it should have a meadows box but much of the early car history is un known, at least to me

Meadows boxes do become available occasionally but don't let originality & hearsay put you off running a Jowett box - If its put together correctly a Jowett box will serve the purpose fine & without issue - If you are not convinced I'm currently in the process of recovering a large amount Javelin / Jupiter gearboxes on behalf of JCS and they may well be meadows boxes amongst the haul - I can advise in due course but its going to be a few weeks before I have everything collected and checked through to see what they are
