Scott and I arrived from Los Angeles and Neil Moore collected us. We visited the parts store and were enticed into buying stainless steel sleeved brake cylinders and gaskets amongst other parts.
Then Dennise cooked us a good meal which we were able to eat outside as the weather was glorious, even for Scott.

Wednesday started with a trip to Ken Brownlie's shed and a BBQ with many local members. Scott raided the parts store here as well. We then drove the club Javelin to the coast for a walk along the sands. The Jav decided to shed it's tyre casing so the spare was fitted. Alan Stanley brought a spare casing around in the evening so that next day we could get it fitted. This was done with a tubeless valve and sealant was spread around the rims. This seems to have worked as it survived some spirited driving along the coast road to New Plymouth along many miles of hairpins, hills and gravel roads.

Thursday started by taking the wheel to the tyre fitters to have the casing brought over by Alan Stanley fitted. After a fruitless search for an inner tube the tyre was fitted tubeless with sealer spread liberally over rivets and the beads.

The 8 hour drive to New Plymouth across some challenging road surfaces from Waitomo through Marokopa to Awakino passed without any tyre issues.

We arrived at the Brougham Heights motel with it's superb appartment and went straight out to Area 41 for some fantastic IPA and fish and vegetables beautifully spiced.

Friday morning started with breakfast from an artisan bakery and then a long walk through Pukekura park and then another in Ratapihipihi Scenic Reserve. Pleasant drive down the surf highway getting glimpses of Taranaki volcano shrouded in cloud before arriving at Stratford to meet some old friends.

On the Saturday evening after a short AGM there followed an entertaining evening of quizzes.

Sunday saw a bright sunny day and the scenic run interspersed with visits to car displays, floral garden and a stunning cultural museum.

The happy hour before the dinner on Sunday was marred by lack of red wine. But hey white was OK.
I won 3rd place in the gymkhana and Scott and I received certificates for coming from overseas. Then we won lots of raffle prizes.

So home to bed after drinking some of the port won in the raffle.

Up bright and early for breakfast at the Shakey Pear in Stratford (get it?)
Our route along the forgotten highway was reported to be closed but was open for one hour only. So some planning was necessary and scenic stops limited. But we did have our passports stamped in the republic along the way.

A gruelling hike through the forest got my step count up to 10000.

We had a reasonable Indian meal in Taumaruni but noisy accommodation sandwiched beside highway and railway. But hey only £40 for the night.
It rained most of the day but saw the railway spiral at Raurimu, the working museum aka scrap yard at Horihito, the ski centre at Turao, the army museum at Waiouru and then drove the great scenic drive through Moawhango to Napier.

Now in wine country of Napier so intending to sample some.
The appartment's cat is guarding the Javelin.
We had problems finding somewhere to eat but ended up having a delicious three course Malay. Oyster omelette, lamb shank, durian ice cream. Everything perfectly cooked, flavoured and presented with every ingredient explained.

The aquarium of New Zealand in Napier filled the morning. Lunch was taken at the Mission winery. We made the difficult decision to go to Taupo on the highway rather than the much longer route as we could not get any accomodation on that route.
The heat of the day and the long climbs needed a couple of stops to top up the radiator. A few scenic stops and a walk to get the 10000 steps.

Now in a hotel overlooking Lake Taupo.

Leaving Taupo we visited Huka Falls, Craters of the Moon, Orakie Geothermal park , Redwood treetop walk. Then had a massive meal in Te puia and watched the geyser erupt as we ate. I had 8 oysters amongst lots of other shellfish, meats and puds. Now bedding down in Rotorua.

Almost everything closed for the holiday so the journey from Rotorua to Tauranaga and then up the coast to Whangamata and across to Auckland just included some scenic walks and a few stops to look at the views. The roads seem to be continuous bends and hills for most of the journey.
First to The Gerald Crapp scenic reserve surrounded by the retirement town of Omokoroa.
Then on to the very remote Homunga Bay that required a 3 hour hike to visit beautiful cove.

My previous trip in 2014 viewtopic.php?t=3103 may show how the colours in the silica thermal area have changed.

After a couple of days working on cars Neil and I took his Toyota 86 which is a Subaru engine competition car to catch the ferry to Kuwau island with it's copper and manganese mines abandoned many times but finally in 1908.
Governor Grey's mansion was closed but I managed to reach my daily exercise target by walking for two hours through the remnants of his garden and zoo that have overtaken the island. The Australian wallabies are now being exported back to Aus where they are endangered but they eat the native flora and enable the poisonous pines to proliferate on the island.
There are no roads on the island so all residents have a jetty and so make the 40 min journey to get everything they need and take all their rubbish back.

A few stops on the way back to see an historic sloop Jane Gifford and Couldrey house that QE 2 and D of E slept in.

Also revisited the bohemian village Puhoi where Stuart and I bought some cheese on our Lions tour.

After a day cutting hedges and cutting back many years of growth on a border filling 3 builders bags, we set off this morning to go as far north as we could making it to Kerikeri.

Stops in Dargaville and Whangerie were interesting as well as some fabulous scenery along the way.
