SCOTTISH SECTION The culmination of months of effort saw on the 5th of August, the
opening of the Jowett Car Club’s Scottish Section Centenary Display at the Dundee
Museum of Transport.
On the previous Tuesday, the vehicles and display materials were installed and Drummond
counted eleven members who came to help along with the museum volunteer staff.
A broad range of vehicles have been put on display for the public to admire:-
These are the 1929 Long Four belonging to Paul Jowitt, the 1934 Jowett 7 and 1947
Bradford, (recently restored at the museum), both belonging to Sandra Purves.
Eddie Hawthorne’s unique 1948 drophead Javelin, body by Carlton, complete with dicky
seat, is also on display along with Willie Macfarlane’s beautifully restored 1952 Javelin and
the last car to leave the factory, Stuart Wilson’s 1954 SC Jupiter.
In addition to the vehicles on display inside, a Bradford van, a Javelin and two Jupiters
braved the elements to greet visitors to the museum. ‘Bruiser,’ Barry Eddon’s delightful
fox terrier (despite the scary name) sat proudly in front of the Bradford.
Much like the rain, a steady flow of visitors attended that day. One enthusiast had been
at our display in Glasgow in June but had sadly brought the wet Glasgow weather with
him. However, the weather did not dampen anyone’s enthusiasm, particularly that of the
Museum’s volunteer staff who have been so supportive throughout.
Some final fettling of the display was carried out and club members in their official
Jowett Commemorative polo shirts were on hand to provide information to the visitors
with club members volunteering to be available on weekends throughout the event. No
doubt, more deserves to be said on the work which went into setting up the display and
those who contributed, which Drummond hopes to do after he has recuperated from his
exertions.
As a renowned fan of cakes and pies, I should make special mention of Brian Marshall
who came all the way from Renfrew, his car loaded with apple and rhubarb tarts from his
excellent local baker, to distribute to club members. After all, as Napoleon said: ‘an army
marches on its stomach.’ (see also pages 14 & 15) - Jeremy Strang
AUG 5th - SEP 17th: Dundee Museum of Transport.
Vintage through to Jupiter are on show. Jowett memorabilia, display engines, models, photographs etc, all
add support to this celebration event.
FEB 18th 2024: Scottish Section AGM at Newliston Arms, Kirkliston
