JAVELIN DELUXE 1950 REAR LIGHTS LUCAS L461

Post by AlecGatherer »

I'm new here. I haven't picked upon the nuances of what to ask where. So I am posting my queries both on here and on the JCC FB page. It is a lazy way of puzzling my way through the recommissioning of LXC, but to be honest I want to take as many shortcuts as possible, and tapping in to existing expertise is of immeasurable value to me. My latest issue:

JAVELIN DELUXE 1950 REAR LIGHTS LUCAS L461
Now that I have currants, it would be nice to have something at the rear to feed with confidence. I can soldier on with my corroded crumbly lights, but in all honesty they could do with replacing. Options that I have found so far include new @ £250/pr. some on eBay starting at half that but not responding to my offer, secondhand on eBay that could well be as bad as my present ones, or bite the bullet and fabricate something. If I go down the latter route, it would be good if I could experiment; does anyone have a pair of lenses/bezels that they would part with, on otherwise unuseable light fittings? Am I missing a trick? Is this covered anywhere (a search on Jowett Talk didn't throw amything up)?

Alex - Lucas L461 is incorrect - these are front side lights that fit various cars and not the rear lamps of a Javelin / Jupiter - these are a very rare rear lamp that apart from Jowett were only used by handful of other coachbuilt / bodied vehicles such as Lanchester / Daimler & Alvis - please see the below e bay listing from the Daimler / Lanchester Owners Club who have these remanufactured - At a little over £120 for a new pair inc P&P its a small price to pay when compared to a homemade bespoke effort that will take up no end of your time / effort & frustration - I'm a professional Jowett restorer and I speak from very first hand experience - Chris

Absolutely spot on Chris - many thanks.
Just ordered a pair via your hepful link.
This is just the help and advice that will get me through this recommissioning, which is proving more problematic than I though it was.
Aren't they always?

Hi All,

Just a thought about Javelin rear lights. On a previous Javelin ( VMG 177 ) , the lamp shells were rusted through and I needed anyway to give her rear flashers for safety reasons. She was our family transport at the time and we had two small children in the back...

I found that Classic Volkwagen Beetle rear lamp clusters ( there is one currently on eBay, item number 334355295815, to illustrate what I mean ) fitted the contour of the Javelin's rear wings exactly. I managed to source a new pair and on they went. The only 'slight' problem was that the nearside VW nacelle needed to cover over the petrol filler, to keep the symetry and contour balance of the pair correct. Opps! So, I made a new hole in the nearside wing above the new VW lamp cluster, fitted the grommet for the filler tube and coupled some flexible petrol-proof tubing to rejoin the petrol cap with a short length of the original steel pipe and going to the remaining stell pipe into tank. In making the new hole in the wing, I was amazed how thick the metal was! No wonder Javelin's are heavy.

They were on the car when I sold VMG177 a couple of years ago. I wonder if she is still on the Javelin register?

All the best,

David

At a JCC meeting many years ago, Gerald Palmer commented that that steel sheet gauge was all that was available at the time; it was that or nothing.

The VW rear light units fitted here are a straight fit with no need for any alteration
of the Jowett, they are from VW Beetle (1961 - 1973). You will need the metal housing that supports the lights, dress
this off to fit the Javelin wing. I don’t think there were any problems fitting these lights. Getting the complete units may
not be easy, my source was a breakers yard. Good luck.
Alf.

Hi Alf,

Thanks for the text. I see the car you show also has the last version ( 1954? ) of the rear number plate light.

Personally, I think these VW lights and the later number plate housing together look really good! As they say, if you get a a new sharper haircut, ' takes years off you sir! '

As for the availability of the VW light nacelles, I think they are called VW Beetle Tombstone lights ( 68 -74 ). I agree that they are probably getting hard to find, but if you search a popular website like eBay, you do turn up quite a few. Also, there are lots of specialist VW parts centres....

All the best,

David
