Partially restored Javelin for sale at auction

Post by 1966jav »

Hello. An example of my father's favourite car (Javelin) has come my way but with neither of us having the skills to complete the restoration - and the quote from the garage we enquired with being beyond our current means, we have decided to offer the car through a local auction house. The auction is tomorrow and we have noticed a distinct absence of marketing for our car in the sale, so thought it may be prudent to mention it to members here. be quick however, as the auction is Tuesday (tomorrow) at midday. Lot 1021 in the vehicle sale at Ewbanks auctions... https://www.ewbankauctions.co.uk

The number SAE 5 is now on another car so if this Javelin (probably the third youngest survivor) was returned to the road it would require an age related plate.

If it was not on SORN then somebody grabbed it.
It was not marketed well. These days you should take pictures of everything so that people can judge the good and bad areas. A good truthful right up also helps.

I think a lot of the restoration was done a long time ago so may have deteriorated since and its quality may be questionable as techniques have improved immensely lately.

Even so may not take much to get it going again.

Regarding the registration. Earlier this year I spoke to the proprietor of the firm that took it in as a job lot purchase of classic cars. Being Mini specialists they did not really want it but were obliged to take everything there was or no sale at all. He told me that he did not have a V5 and understood the registration documents to have been lost. I looked the plate up on DVLA and it was not there. Worth saying that plates on retention do not show up. He seemed a very genuine character and he was quite open about where it had come from and his intention to move the car on as it stood. The plate has recently appeared on the DVLA records (a 1965 Mercedes) and I note that the date of V5 issue is January 2017. My supposition is that the plate was removed by the previous long term owner (or family) before it was sold together with the other cars. In fact it does not really matter who did it, it is fait accompli.

Personally I am still not very clear how one goes about transferring a plate from a classic car. The various DVLA web sites are ambiguous and contradictory. My understanding is that an MOT is now not required, but proof of 5 ( ? ) years ownership is required either by way of being taxed or by SORN. Unfortunately this particular car had really dropped off the radar in recent years so I had no prompt to check the DVLA status until this year, 2022.

To be honest I'm not surprised it didn't sell - Has a rule Javelin projects don't sell easily - many vendors & owners completely underestimate the time, commitment & money that has to be found in order to restore what is quite a complex vehicle - you can readily expend 2 -3 times the physical end value of a Javelin in restoration - My advice has always been for anyone considering purchasing one is purchase the best possible car available that your budget can afford - The worst possible thing that you can do is purchase a £2k restoration project in the hope that it will be on the road within a few months and with a limited restoration budget

Hello Nick

Embarrassed at the error of stating it to be an early car rather than a late one. Beyond some serious brain fade I wonder if I can attribute the error to the abundance of tablets I've been taking since a major surgery in May. Perhaps pure brain fade

A great deal of work has been invested and I'm hopeful that the endeavours will mean that this car becomes a survivor that can be enjoyed and appreciated by classic car fans in the years to come. Apologies if any offence has been caused by my ignorance of the marque and my attempts to present a candid assessment of what is for sale. Do feel free to volunteer constructive input to eradicate the stated riddling of errors.

Thank you in advance

Some advice to the vendor - I very much doubt that you will achieve the asking price of £2,500 regardless of the work to date - The car still requires a huge amount of time & expense in order to return it to the road - You need to be practical with the asking price and take the amount of work & expense required to complete the vehicle into account rather than basing your asking price on the value of the works undertaken to date - Why would anyone bother restoring this car when a nicely presented - hassle free on the road example can be purchased for between £6,000 - £8,000

Unsurprisingly goes unsold at auction again - until the vendor is genuinely realistic with the asking price its likely to remain unsold too
