Having spent 2hrs on my knees in a Welsh field early on in this year’s LCES rally successfully fixing an apparent, random drop to one-cylinder power, I have a question for you learned pre-war Jowettteers.
Are there specific shaped spanners to help in the adjustment of the big and little nuts for valve Tappet clearance adjustment? Having a 15mm spanner and typical adjustable was clearly asking the near impossible given the thickness of these tools and the space available between the faces. For good insight I had taken my feelers with me (did a higher force know what was about to happen?). I am thinking they must have provided hardened bent-plate spanners. Any thoughts?
After this adjustment Eddie ran like a dream. Not a cloud in the sky, daffodils out and lambs skipping in the fields as the Jowett blasted along the single track roads, what is not to like!

I certainly wish I had an original pair of spanners too! You're quite right, they need to be thin and even better if offset especially for the dreaded inlet valve under the steering column!

There was an offset spanner for it. I have half of the original one. I believe one end did the Tappets and the other was a Key for the Cross caps on the engine, gearbox and diff fillers. I remember Dr Follows having one as part of the tool kit he still has with this Kestrel. Will grab a photo when I'm in the garage. I also have small cut down spanner for the small 3/8 nuts ones.
How was the trundle? I was very envious of the photos popping up on social media! Really need more trundling events about the place!

Alan - thanks for that, I’d be interested to know what the spanner is meant to look like. I was going to head into a local Halfords type place to see if they have a slim spanner and then adapt. The front cover of the latest Jowetteer is fabulous….that Weasel looks a super Jowett. The LCES was a great day out (bar the Tappet of course). Yes, trundling is Jowett heaven.

Hi Bruce, sorry for the delay! You know your in trouble when you can't remember which Jowett they were in! Here are the photos as attached! As I recall the spanner was a lot longer originally, with the other end being a key for X caps on the various components. The 5/16th spanner funnily enough was from one of the first set of spanners I bought when I first started working on the car. I managed to snap the ring end adding a bit more umph on a cylinder head nut! The nut was still tight though!
