Jupiter Rear Shock Absorbers
Does anyone have a reference number for the Monroe rear shocks ? I have an old note of R1045 which are widely available with min length 250 max length 392 but cannot remember if this is definitely for the Jup/Jav. Trying to eliminate an occasion knock on sharp bumps and having checked all else am left suspecting the current Boge units where the top shoulder is very close/almost touching the fixing brackets.

You may like to check brake mechanism is not hitting spare wheel carrier. Most likely is exhaust.
If you still suspect shocks take them off and try a speed bump again.
Alternatively measure the closed length.

KC: Part number on those is 987?
Monroe number 32207 is a gas charged shock and the current superseding unit for the original. Original style oil filled is NLA.
Original spec: Compressed 11.5" Extended 19"
It is doubtful that the compressed length is ever reached or exceeded. Ditto the extended as the Panhard rod mucks about with droop. Speaking of the rod, check the rubber bushes as failure there lets the axle move.
Also, if the shock eye bush is good, then the top of the shock can't move relative to the mount. A clunk means big movement and should leave a mark.

I doubt the part number is 987 but it was what was written on the box.

Thanks for info - Monroe 32207 looks about right. I will get underneath and do some final checks/measurements before order - they are available on- line.
Car was in body off condition a few months ago and all bushes and everything else checked as noise (seems to just behind drivers right shoulder) was there before body removal. Still there on refitting and nothing obvious especially as ali stone guards which I also suspected have been replaced with one piece plastic guard carefully fitted to be well clear. Hence focus on shock absorbers and their mounting. The gap I mentioned between shoulder and bracket only a few thou hence thought that with any slight compression of rubber bush or lateral movement might contact on sharp impact.
I say all checked....except otherwise for the rubber bushes in the spring arm/torsion bar. Could this be another possibility - nuisance value as rear wings would need to come off again though they probably will unbolt fairly easily as only just refitted..... Any views on likely symptoms for this? Sounds more of a knock than any squeak or grinding and arms look central/aligned in slots of the alloy cover.
Can't think or see anything else and car quiet on most rough surfaces - just not the sharper holes prevailing on South Oxfordshire's badly potholed roads.

If your checks do not reveal anything it is also possible that the chassis or petrol tank is being hit by the body support subframe. This is quite likely as you have had a body off restoration. The chassis does flex about a centimeter from end to end and this can also affect door catches. This is why rubber mountings were originally used. Hood mechanism? Spare wheel? Battery?

Has already stated above the noise was there before the body was removed & refitted - therefore it's highly unlikely to be the body or superstructure that is making contact with anything

First thanks again Scott for the Monroe ref - bought and fitted a couple of ref: 32207 (Plenty on e-bay from UK suppliers though made by Tenneco USA - I think they are used on some Jeep models) and they seem good. Supplied with PU bushes and correct size metal spacer for top mount. Have been on a test drive and no knocking to date on any of the usual pothole culprits. Good result so far!
Compared with the Boge units I fitted on recommendation when I first got the car in 1997 these Monroe units have 2 1/2" longer max length, though 1" longer at the minimum at 11.5" but as Scott suggested and having measured up this is not a problem. And the top shoulder is well clear of the mounting bracket. Couldn't see any mark on the shoulder of the old unit but they were well coated with Dinitrol. I wonder if it may be they were topping out on rebound given the reduced max length. Anyway it all feels better.
I had this problem since before the body was so expertly refitted by Chris and though I needn't have bothered I did check everything clear. The Panhard rod has all new PU bushes after I did the axle conversion.
All looks like new underneath (probably better than new Chris?) and with its new shiny blue shocks.
