I am working my way through various mechanical problems on a car I bought a while ago with the intent of having a roadworthy Javelin while restoration work continues on others. Inevitably, I have ended up chasing prop shaft vibration and ended up stripping it all out out and re-assembling. The clue was the vibration occurred most at approaching 40mph, so a front shaft problem. Success came with finding that the gearbox flange was loose on the taper. I could not detect this at all by giving it all a shake while it was in one piece.
Not directly involved with the problem, the car has been fitted with a modified centre bearing. I attach two pictures that show it in position and removed to show the rather modest sized bearing inside a rubber ring. The metal housing seems to be a modification of the part of the type normally used on the gearbox tail shaft. Does anyone recognise the origins of this assmbly? Is it supplied as a spare part by someone or is it a one off effort?
