Shackle pins - 'any old bolt won't do!

Post by Tony Fearn »

Thanks to KC I have just had a look at one of the old Jowetteer magazines that he's kindly put on JowettTalk.
There is a wealth of knowledge to be gleaned from the technical contents of these publications.
Below I've copied just such a one which will show you what I mean:-

'I have been looking into the manufacture of shackle pins for vintage Jowetts. The first problem to be considered is the type of steel for raw material. I have contacted several Club members; a Jowett owner in the VSCC; Dr Shapland the spares representative of the VSCC and also Sanderson Kayser, steel manufacturers in Sheffield.
The recommended specification is EN24T, a nickel chrome vanadium steel with a tensile strength of 55 tons per square inch. The advantage of this specification is that it can be machined to size and does not require a subsequent case hardening operation.
As these pins are a safety critical item I propose to buy prime Sheffield steel from Sanderson Kayeer complete with a chemical analysis certificate.
The bar would be obtained in round form, then there are seven machining operations to produce shackle pins to original size and specification.
A drawing of the original pin is shown below. (There are different lengths for each car and I would appreciate your help on length measurement)'.
