1929 Gearbox cracked

Post by Brucegirvan »

1929 short 2 converted to a sports style layout and body. Has trialed ok and done many miles without issue this year. Did 80 miles yesterday without issue. Did 6 mile loop today, Including stop at Horsted Keynes station on the Bluebell line (perfect period), again running nicely in all gears including reverse. Got back home and went to select reverse - no go and a decidedly graunchy sound when trying to select first then reverse. Switched off and found the gearbox dumping its oil on the ground. Photos show the issue. A crack that originates at what I assume is the reverse gear bearing/shaft housing and now runs horizontal To about half way along the housing. . Any clues as to why? Is this known? What is the fix? Can you weld up these gearboxes? Any recommendations welcome.

Best regards

Bruce

Oh dear.
A similar problem can occur on the Javelin clutch housing caused by seisure of the torque reaction ring at the rear of the gearbox. Also uneven tightening of the gearbox bolts might have caused the problem......or just old age.

Anything can be welded by an expert and it may need some machining afterwards. Take lots of accurate measurements before and after welding to check for any warping.

I've had gearboxes and engine blocks welded before, but if a bearing has let go, they often break through at a bearing housing, so once repaired, they need machining / sleeving as well. The 4 pre war boxes seem more difficult to come by, but there doesn't seen to be much shortage of 3 speeds if the worst comes to the worst. If you can find another box, its a good opportunity to make a good one out of two

My first port of call would be JCS to see what gearbox / housing availability that they have - fresh stock arrives on regular basis and you never know it could be the easy solution

Thank you all. It is a 3 speed box. It looks like JCS has one that is very close. I am also having a cold welding expert look at the case to see about repair. Having a spare gearbox when running 2 pre-wars, as we, do makes sense. A good clean means the gearbox comes up quite nicely....Image

Bruce - If the cold welding expert does not think its viable - I have a very good contact down your neck of the woods who could possibly laser weld that for you - laser welding creates nil distortion - Chris
