Is this axle from a Jowett 7?
If so has anybody any documentation such as a photo, drawing or manual page to back up an application for hill climb competition papers?

Thanks Tony for the manual pages - looks exactly like mine. Using it on an AJS VSCC Hill Climb car I am building. Going through pre- acceptance eligibility application at present. Quite willing to pay for a copy of any manual /info you may have. Peter

Hello Peter.
Here are a few more scans of the relevant pages in 'THE BOOK OF THE JOWETT', and another single one from the Jowett Manual.
The 'BOOK OF THE JOWETT' comes up occasionally on eBay, but if you've only got the back axle, it won't be of much use.
Have a look again at the Fig, 17. This is the more 'modern' version of attachment to the prop shaft and uses 4 hole Layrub couplings.
The photo of your axle shows a three-pronged attachment from the very early pre-war axle which used flexible (?canvas-based) discs.
Perhaps the latter will shred more quickly than the former when you're climbing a 1 in 3!
That being said, a friend of mine has used universal joints instead, not I might add to play at hill-climbing, - may be the way to go if the rules allow.

What year is your car, Keith? And what info do you need?
From memory, my 1930 has ‘518’ cast into the diff housing. I have seen this same cast number on several 1930 axles.

With the Hill Climb race season delayed, I have started the assembly of the AJS - Bugatti which uses the axle you have identified for me. The pictures help a lot.

Whilst the half shafts "Look" ok, are these available from the Club or do I need to make some spares.

I am missing the flanges for Brake drum/wheel which fit onto the tapered - keyway'd halfshaft ends - again are these available or I need to make them.

Initial 1st assembly in attached photo, checking before I start to make the Bugatti body.

Careful regarding eligibility, since the VSCC only accepts Jowetts (and their components in specials) made before the end of 1930.

I'm not an expert, but those images look to be from a later car to me (wire wheels etc). Don't the earlier ones have an aluminium diff carrier?

Is the axle just placed over the springs for the photo?
It looks quite odd.
The brake levers on the pre-wars hang downwards.

Sorry for delayed reply, wife had virus - now fully recovered.

Tony - Yes axle just placed for photo, mounting platforms match AJS spring width.

John - All components for this hybrid have been approved by the VSCC eligibility committee. The wire wheels are MG and converting/using their centre lock wheel hubs. The car will race in the PVT class.

Where could I get a drawing/photo of the half shaft flange/brake back plate showing the flange design - length etc. as I have to make two. Could I "Borrow" one from someone to replicate?

Any help/advice appreciated.
