More detail in this thread
Just to record that my restoration project of 25 years is almost on the road. She passed the MOT with flying colours last Friday (14th March), and today I visited my local DVLA office at Preston to start the ball rolling to verify her numberplate.
They will send an inspector I think to check all the numbers etc are ok before all is well and I can run her on the road legally. I hope this will occur in the next two weeks.
"Sarah Jane", a companion to "Mary Ellen", (my 1934 Short Saloon) is a 1933 'Flying Fox'. There's still a hood to be made but this is in hand and booked in for early April.
Your interest in the forum: From 1962 to '63, CA Bradord LLG 125 (Repaired and used). From 1966 to '67 Black deLuxe Javelin LDF 738 (Scrapped with broken chassis) From 1967 to '87 Black de Luxe Javelin MKC 1 (later 6469TU). (Sold as non-runner with tons of spares, 1987) From about 1980 to '87 ex WD Jowett stationary engine. (Sold on) From 1966 to present, 1930 Long Four Fabric Saloon, Dark Blue / Black. Taken in a part-repaired state to the 2010 Centenary Rally, returned to a roadworthy state by 2013.
I cannot believe that I will ever get my Long Four to look that good, but I would be satisfied to get it on the road and leave the 'proper' restoration to the next owner.
Alan, Ian, George and Alastair, thanks for the much-appreciated comments, I'm naturally very pleased to have almost managed to get my own "Flying Fox" on the road. It's taken many years, and several similar vehicles have come up for sale in the interim, but I've never just had sufficient funds to buy one of them.
Now I'm retired and have the funds, there are none for sale, so I'm glad the long-term project has come to fruition.
Yes Alan, "Mary Ellen's" registration is BV 3232 (1934), and "Sarah Jane's" will hopefully be BV 2121 (1933). These are both Blackburn numbers, and must have come from the same Jowett agent.
"Mary Ellen" wears the enamelled supplier's plaque from 'Thomas Beech and Son', but although I have a spare one from the same supplier, having been given, by Roy Braddock, the last remaining plaque that his father fixed to the cars he sold, in memory of Roy and Jessie (much-missed friends and Jowetteers) I have fixed it above the dashboard of "Sarah Jane".
Alastair, - I've booked in for Crieff with "Sarah Jane" and have arranged to meet the 'Yorkshire crowd', on the way up, at Galashiels on the Thursday so that we can proceed in convoy from there to Crieff for the Friday start. We shall 'retreat' South on the Monday, staying over-night in Carlisle.
Tony Well done, I am currently in Florida and have managed to get access to a computer to check Jowett Talk. Crieff is just round the corner. Good to know that you are all coming up the " scenic route " through the Scottish Borders. Look forward to see Sarah Jane at Crieff.
Don't tell daughter, Amy, as she has been pestering me to finish her Jup that I started rebuilding 27 years ago. It was supposed to have been ready for her 18th, now she wants it for her 30th in August. I stalled when it came to doing redoing the corroded aluminium panels behind the doors.
Wanted to do it myself; but may well take it to my local Classic Autos man and pay the price.

Well done Tony - she looks beautiful. I especially like the original bumpers, they really set it off! At least it makes me feel a bit better about my Kingfisher taking so long - who cares as long as the outcome is as good as yours? Looking forward to seeing you and Sarah Jane at Crieff.
I've already thanked Alan B., Ian H., George G., and Alastair G. for their comments, but must also add Drummond, Keith A., Keith C., -(although he didn't actually say anything about the car)-, David and Ken for their posts as well.
Over Easter we've had our 'kiddies' back with various friends, and they all wanted to see the car and to sit in it.
I thought that this was a good idea as the family has been very supportive over the years, so some of them climbed aboard into the front and into the dickey seat.
However, as the rear springs were re-tempered over 15 years ago, and have been supporting the body over this time, when the combined weight of four adults finally tested her, the rear springs were not as they were, and on reversing down the road, the front of the propshaft rubbed on the underneath of the body, producing a rather ominous noise.
So, this being the case, I'll either have to have the rear springs re-tempered, or change them for a spare pair I already have in the garage, which are untested.
I'm still waiting for the DVLA inspector to ratify my registration number, after which I hope to take her to Wibsey (near Bradford) to have a hood etc. fitted, (and thanks to I.P. for his help ) and because I am coming to Crieff alone, without Hilary, in late May, I might just wait until the middle of summer until I sort the back end out. One person plus an overnight bag in the car shouldn't cause any problems.
Everything's sorted, registration ratified by DVLA - (full marks to the Preston local office, very professional), I couldn't sleep with the back springs as they were so I've replaced them with help from I.P..
I.P. also introduced me to a chap in Wibsey who has made the hood, and a hood cover within four days! - it was raining all the time so his wife didn't want to go out. If you're local-ish and want a good job at a reasonable price then I can recommend him. Phone I.P. for contact.
I've been doing about 20 miles every three days or so for the last couple of weeks to loosen the engine and it seems to be ok as is the rest of the car.
So here's a photo of the completed car at Bideford.
Tony.

Tony, just been finding my way around JT looking at last years photos of your fox before new hood would appreciate as many detail pictures as you wish to fire at me , you must be very pleased with your hard work.
.
Regards Anthony Gouldsmith
Barnstaple is but a 'spit and a stride' from Bideford, and I hope to be there with the car at the National Jowett Rally, so if you wish to take photos or whatever just say 'hello'.
Is your 'Fox' on the road? Will we see it alongside Bob Gray's and my own similar car at the Rally? Even if it's not ready for the road perhaps you could drag it there for us all to see.
I can't wait to come south (west) and see all our friends again. It is the highlight of the Jowetteering calendar to my mind.
I hope to be at the Durrant House hotel on the Thursday evening and am leaving on the following Tuesday.
