cost of Jowett parts

Post by David Kemp »

Many people complain about the cost of spares for our sixty year old cars. I however find repairing my Jupiter & my kids Mini's a bargain compared to my modern, a 2014 Subaru.
At 112000 kilometres the Subaru needs new back shocks, prices vary from $400 each to $600 each.
To have new front shocks made for my Jupiter they were $250 each, my son bought an entire set of shocks for his Mini for $150. Both my Jupiter & the Mini shocks were good quality not generic low grade parts.
Also though my Subaru is only 5 years old I can't just buy them! They are harder to find than Mini parts, which my son can get within 24 hours if not on the shelf.
Parts common to Jowett & other British cars are likewise still available off the shelf , such as ignition & brake parts.
Good memories of Bradfords.

My daughter's 8 year old Mini needed a new petrol pump ...£400 plus labour of about the same. I did find a cheaper source and cheaper labour in the end.
Service kit for Javelin pump.. £12...labour nought.

The problem is these days everything has to fit in such a small space so is re-designed for every model. Components also have to talk to the car's computer which changes frequently. They also have to cope with changing regulations, cost cutting and consumer demand rather than just building the car around what was available.
