Is it to support and tension the rubber band that connects the cardon shaft with speedometer/odometer cable

Copper rivets on the brake shoes would be so they did not score the precious brake drums.

Chris, are you the guy who was asking about Dynamo's. If so ,then Barry Widmer and myself have posted about a Paul who runs Powersmart 07747 830444. He rebuilt my dynamo and voltage switch brilliantly.

A colleague collected a front axle for me last week to replace the one on the car which transpired, during a through inspection by the assembled experts in Grantham, to be from a 30s car. Along with the axle came a large box of old Jowetteers. I pulled one out at random and in the December 1990 edition was an article on cone clutches by a Keith Dennison!

Keith - I wonder if this should be added to the Technical Library? Instructions say to put it in my personal library and ask for it to move, but I can't see my space, probably because I hadn't used it form some time and it got pruned during your upgrade.

That is really helpful Barry. Thanks. It confirms that my problem was almost certainly "cone sag".

All Jowetteers are in the library but the text in them has not been moved into the JT database. However, there is a searchable folder available that uses Adobe technology which is useable by installing software on your PC. I can also send a CD with it on . You can then post relevant articles into the library since all the Jowetteers have been OCR ed.download/file.php?id=3912&mode=view

There is a lot of information and suggestions for cone clutches on the VSCC forum. Perhaps the most amusing suggestion is from Mark Brett:

Clutch enema
A night before a race meeting I found a slipping clutch where oil from the leaking rear main rope seal had finally done its thing. Without time to strip it and clean it all properly I discovered the effectiveness of the Patent Clutch Enema. A small hole in the bellhousing / tin sump allowed insertion of a rubber pipe which led up to a squeegee bottle filled with hot water and Fairy liquid. Whoosh! Ooh Nurse! Start engine, depress clutch a few times with more revs and then wash it out with clean water. The good news? The clutch gripped well and has been fine for thousands of miles. The bad news? Our front garden rapidly filling with oily soapy suds escaping from every orifice under pressure from a V8 bubble-blowing machine. And the neighbour's front garden too. Mrs. B recommends low-suds washing machine powder next time.

I gave the car a good run this week with the clutch that has flat friction material. With 4 big men ( I guess 50 stone) onboard I needed to tighten the clutch springs. The result was amazing. It handled the hills perfectly. It also disengages reliably.
