SA Jupiter Hood

Post by conrod »

I am at the stage of the restoration of my Jupiter that i need a hood making - Can anyone suggest a trimmer who would have a pattern who would
make me one up without having to take the car to them ?
I have a local trimmer who could fit it, but they don't have the facilities to make the back window

I have one you can borrow.
I can't opine on the advisability of this route.
Where are you?

I have 2 original SA hoods that are available for pattern - however I would strongly advise that a new hood needs to made from scratch due to the hand built nature of the Jupiter - from much experience what fits one car will not fit the next without some modification

Thanks Tim - Through the power of this site I have one on its way to me from another member but i appreciate your offer of help.
My intentions are that when it arrives to fit it and see how much out it is and get it made accordingly.
From your experience , what area is the usual variation - front to back or side to side - or simply the height of hood (which would be caused by
the fitting of the wood frame gaps) ?

Over the years, I have had four Jupiters pass through where the material and/or wood was restored or replaced and have two more that will be done over the next year.

Other than the hinges (even those differ slightly car to car and even within a car), no two wood pieces were the same, including the left and right versions of the same part. The factory made liberal use of wood shims to make the reach from the upright post to the windscreen and I have found shims on the uppermost upright so that the upper hinge had a place to mount.

It's a bit of an understatement to say that all the tops are different!
