Long Two Springs

Post by BarryCambs »

The front driver's side of the car has always been very noticeably lower than the other 3 corners and it's recently become quite difficult to ignore the fact the front springs continually bottom out on anything other than a dead smooth road. It certainly didn't make for a relaxing ride. Having seen Owens Springs in Rotherham mentioned in a Practical Classics article, I dropped the springs off the car and sent them up.

Very friendly and helpful chap rang on Thursday and said they'd been inspected and they were basically sound but needed a re-temper and resetting. Would be done middle of next week. 24 hours later, they turned up on the doorstep! I've fitted them back on the car today and it's completely transformed. I might well treat her and send the rears up next winter. Very happy and much recommended

Looking good Barry!

That is the one of the jobs I'd like to do on the long saloon. I think their 80 year life span has done quite well, but in definite need of some tlc. What a quick turnaround.

We were out in it today again on account of the garage who mot'd the Volvo managing to wreck it, leaving it off the road pending an independent vehicle inspector's arrival next week. The leaf springs do have a working life and the tempering does seem to have a shelf life too as it seemed to get worse quite quickly once it was put back on the road having stood for 40 years. It actually bounces now if you hit a bump and you can feel them working progressively - very clever design stuff. I paid £250 including the carriage and I think that's pretty reasonable as I've seen the furnaces they use to heat the leaves to near white heat and it probably used 50 quids worth of gas to do them!

I asked the chap at Owens Springs if I could expect them to last another 90 years when they were done. He asked me how old I was and I said 54. He said in that case they'll have a life time guarantee.
