- Your interest in the forum: Have long had an interest in classic cars and have owned, maintained, improved and driven a 1971 MGB for the last six years. Now about to sell that, as I have just bought a 1953 Jowett Javelin - a car that I have long wished to own, being the first of my father's cars that I have any memory of.
Hope to use the forum for technical advice, general information and making contact with other Javelin owners. Intend to join JCCUK. - Given Name: Ken
1952 Jupiter - unfinished project
I see that Brightwells Leominster Classic Car Auction on 6 March includes a 1952 Jowett Jupiter, described as a nearly finished project (£30,000 spent so far). Estimate is £10,000- £20,000. Looks to have had much work done, but no doubt someone will know more about it than I.

What a shame after spending so much the owner did not have time to enjoy it.
Probably a good buy.

Re: 1952 Jupiter - unfinished project
Plenty of money still needs to be spent on it
Headlights - some on ebay £750 plus postage
Wiring loom
Quarterlight chrome and fitting
Window lifter/ winder - seems to be missing
Wiper motor recondition
Brakes (look at brake reservoir)
Door Lock
Door panels have no hole in them for door mechanism and window mechanism
Engine ? - who knows ? Have to assume it needs rebuilding
Is the petrol tank fitted ?
Front side grills need making and chroming
Exhaust
Wheels to be painted
It has such a large price range - Could cost 10k plus to finish - or even more depending on how good the paint job is

Re: 1952 Jupiter - unfinished project
Someone dug deep for this yesterday - £26,400 (£24k + commission) is an awful lot money for a non running Jupiter that still requires some heavy expenditure - exhaust / wiring harness / tyres to name a few - several parts missing - engine & drive train are a unknown quantity and there is no evidence or record of any work on them - it may well have had £30k spent on it and from what I can see you could readily end up spending another £10 - £15k on it before it sees the road

Re: 1952 Jupiter - unfinished project
Of course it is easy to pay large sums to complete such a car, if everything is farmed out to specialists (or worse, to a 'restorer' who project manages it). However, since the expensive and specialist work has been finished to a high standard -new wings, painting, trimming etc (and I understand that the car is a good runner) the remaining detail work is well within the scope of an enthusiastic owner. No need for such pessimism, I feel.

Far from being pessimistic - I restore Jupiters for a living (currently have 2 complete restorations along with a body off rebuild & paintwork on a third in progress) and believe me I fully understand exactly what it costs to build / restore & maintain these cars - any ideas of returning the car in question to the road in exchange for a couple of weekends of light assembly work & few hundred £ spent on spares is in pipedream territory

I bought a pair of P770 headlights from a supplier in the states, included bulb and holder, £250 a pair. This was around 7 years ago

Scott brought me a pair over, probably from the same supplier. They are available from Holden, but at a price I could not afford.
