Security concerns

Post by Forumadmin »

I read in this month's Jowetteer that someone expressed concerns over the security of jowett.org. The Chairman said
Jowett.org: is owned by and operated on behalf of the Jowett Car Club Ltd, by Keith Clements. Keith spent his working career in the computer world, most recently specialising in cyber security. I have, once again, received concerns about the site. For the sake of repetition, again, I advise that there is no obligation to have any of your details on the site but the site is a great benefit to the Club. It originated over 20 years ago as a personal interest of Keith’s and he has developed and expanded it ever since. Keith’s experience means that the site is as secure as it can be, but as with all internet traffic, if you receive a mail purporting to come from the site, that concerns you, do not click on it just delete it.
An internet offer that looks too good to be true usually is!

If you do have any concerns then please express them to the webmaster who should be able to explain the risks and controls that are put in place to mitigate them. Only this week I received an email from a member saying his antivirus software did not like the new JowettTalk. I did some research and a few hours checking things. One can never be certain there is not an issue but my judgement is that in this case the anti-virus software was detecting something it thought was suspicious when I am convinced there was not an issue. This particular software, Avast, is known for its false positive detection. I contacted the developers of Avast to report the issue.

Anti Virus software is like a security guard thinking everything is a felon when in essence the majority is good. Many other users, using many other anti virus systems have not reported any issues. But that is not to say there is not one. So please report to me any issues you find.

If this issue reported to the Chairman was indeed an email purporting to come from jowett.org then I could, if it had been reported to me, been able to investigate and see if indeed it had come from the jowett.org server. I could then put into effect measures that would prevent it happening again.
The website is now in its 22nd year and over that period technology has changed many times. The recent upgrade has seen the implementation of the latest software which should improve security.

Please report to me immediately any issues you encounter.
