Tips on Efficiently Uploading Pictures to Forums-Leo Bolter
When posting pictures to a forum there is a very useful accessory program that can be used on Windows machines (XP). It gives a simple way to resize the pictures before you upload them.
In a forum situation there is usually no need for huge pictures and correspondingly large files (unless fine detail is desired over the whole image) . . . usually cropping can be utilised to "focus" the viewer’s attention on any important detail". Importantly, it also saves on using your bandwidth and reduces time to upload. Many “Forum Programsâ€

Previous post by Keith Andrews.
Start from scratch
locate your pic, often a good idea to edit it 1st
crop out the background
then resize to about 500 to 550 wide
Then 'save as' choose jpg and in the opition box that appears about 20 to 25% and save to your desktop.
hit reply or new post button
type in stuff the stuff u want at the top of the pic
Clk "upload pic"
in that window clk "browse" choose desktop and the pic name
Now clk the "send" button
Note: u may have to wait a little once u have clked the send button...the web site server has a bit of work to do if you have not resized the pic as mentioned at the start...
AND .bmp pic will not be accepted so convert as mentioned at the start
Now clk the "standard" button that appears
Contining to type your message
If u wish to add another pic clk the uploadpc again
OR instead of clking the "standard" button above you can clk
"insert picture and upload another one"
but do not "standrad" or "insert picture and upload another one" untill u have your message txt that goes above it in place.
You can edit your post to get things right
The pic appears in the post like this
You can cut and paste it somewhere else in the post and use the "preveiw" instead of the "submitt " button to have a look see what your post will look like... put the code for the pic on its own line with no other txt.

You prepare pictures as explained in this posting above http://jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=726
Then either 'Post reply' or create 'new Topic' in your selected forum area or topic.
There is a Blue hyperlink called 'Upload Pic' which brings up a new window.
Select 'Browse' and find the file you just created and click 'open'.
Select 'send', this creates a new window and processes your picture.
Select 'standard' and the link is created between 'img' tags in your posting.
Add some text in your posting and 'submit' it.
Hope that helps.

Leo reported yesterday that he had problems uploading pictures. We had an extended Skype conversation which did not resolve the issue. Basically it all worked for me; but not for him. Mine did not upload a 3.2MB file; but was ok with 1.4MB and smaller.
So we need to know if indeed there is a problem, perhaps caused by slow connections or just plain bad luck when you connect. There is a possibility it is something to do with session control as there is some time between you sending the picture and JowettTalk responding by displaying the picture you sent. Once the picture arrives and you acknowledge by clicking 'standard', I hope the system invariably puts the 'img' link into the post and all is well. If not let me know.

By default, web severs..this is the part that works a web site behind the seines....has a limit as to size and time it takes to upload...Leo reported yesterday that he had problems uploading pictures.
Hence if the file is too big it can also take a longer time.
So As above Crop so only the subject is left...
then resize to about longest side 600
Save as jpg and in opition choose about 25%
The last part is VERY IMPORTANT!!!
This takes a pic from several meg down to about 20kb to 60kb
If ppl want a open source high end photo editor ...like photoshop (which is very expensive
Google for a application called paint.net

Keith,
UploadPic is performing okay again for me today.
I have just completed a couple of "dummy run" (Post Replys) using it.
The first was with a further reduced version of the original pic (the dimensions of this file were 600p x 439p = 132kb) and the other was the same file I used successfully a few days ago (dimensions 800 x 585 = 720kb) both responded as I had expected from the previous experience.
http://jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1149&highlight=
Both of the above mentioned images had been cropped beforehand to show the content that I'd wanted fellow forum members to see, of course.

Anyway, not being a expert, but being sort of proud of anything I produce, I have "managed" that problem . . . . I simply don't submit anything to that site these days.
Best regards, to all.

I'm no expert, but by this I assume you are suggesting a major reduction in file size by a radical change in .jpg compression . . . personally I can't go with that, as I have found that images I've spent a lot of time and effort manipulating, and for instance, making into panoramas etc., when "submitted" to a particular website, are later found to be dreadfully pixelated when they are published on the site. I may be wrong and will willingly stand corrected, but I assume that my work has been "over compressed" by the webmaster in that case.Save as jpg and in opition choose about 25%

this has been cropped, resized then compressed and uploaded to jowett

the orginal hot linked here

And notice the speed they load on the page...I even notice it with a 9500 kb down load speed, and lets face it most jowet ppl wil have between 45kb and maybe 256 kb....

Thanks Keith A. for you comment (and my apologies for calling you Andrew!)

Never-the-less of the two pics you've posted above, the larger one is closer to what I was wanting in regard to the overall detail etc (perhaps I really do need new glasses
) . . . . . but, if there is a problem for the majority of our forum members with the aspect of waiting a few moments for the image to download, or any other potential server overloading issues, then I'll "downsize a bit" . . . just let me know folks!
One thing that you might like to explain to me though Keith, is why you see that large image as 1.33mb, but on my computer and on the server I use, the file "Info" says it's "just" 720kb (800p x 585p)? (I was under the impression that I was posting a big'ish, but not a huge file!) Yet, by looking in my Photoshops "Image size", it's showing as 1.33mb, 72dpi and 800 x 585 pixels . . . I've a lot to learn it seems
. . . or maybe I should just give up!
Regards, Leo

Leo I know you more by reputaion..you can work(!) lathe and that sort of stuff... I can USE a lathe..that is miles apart.
I would fully expect to be corrected on something I know a small amount about.
I have been around windows computers since Dos. and having a neighbourhood network
If dealing with pic of documents, one may have a basic pic editor with your scanner software....
crop etc as above then under filters there is a despeckle and a shapen filter, where one can clean up the colour discrency bits then clean up the rough edges...small increse in sixe, not enough to matter.
As a rule of thumb, a web page is starting to get big over 64kb

1. Above is the file downloaded using ftp from your site then 'UploadPic'. The website automatically resizes to 32299bytes.
https://jowettnet/forum/download/file.p ... &mode=view
2. Above is the picture full size 737275bytes loaded into the JowettGallery.
https://jowettnet/forum/download/file.p ... &mode=view
3. Above Gallery auto resizes to 61802 bytes depending on your upload settings it also creates a thumbnail for putting in the index.
4. Below the link correctly formed to Leo's server without %20 instead of _ to stop that red square box. It takes a long time to load. JowettGallery does not allow direct access to jpg file so the URL rather than IMG must be used.
If you compare image 4 with image 2 and resize your window so pictures are same size you will see no difference in quality; but there is with image 3. However, usually the smaller size file, which normally gives a smaller sized picture, is of reasonable quality. Pictures with a lot of detail, such as a panorama, will need to be larger size and larger file. But use a link and give a thumbnail or default picture in JowettTalk so the user sees what they will spend time downloading. Compression can give funny results, particularly if done repeatedly or with some patterns.

I should post a wee Thumbnail amongst the text in the post I'm making and also in there provide a link to my server (large file) for those who want to bother with a detailed but large file with it's slow download . . is that right? (I now remember I have done that method before when posting a panorama of a Rally in Fielding!)
Keith C. Skype-
Put the large file on JowettGallery (thus storing the file permanently for Jowett people, as home websites can disappear) and a smaller one on JowettTalk or just hold the conversation on JowettGallery through the comments. The latter is only really useful for archive type material where it captures discussion alongside the picture or document.

I have increased the UploadPic size of pictures allowed to 250kB with default max size of 800x800pixels. You can reduce size using max size box.
I have also allowed the ability to choose an embedded picture or to have the picture loaded in a new window via a link.
This shows that facility where you need to change the caption where it says Picture File. To access you click on the link. You can use both the img and url in the same post.
