air filter
Whilst virtually complete, the one assembly Iam missing on my E0PB Javelin is the oil bath air filter assembly on the bonnet. I have zero information on this assembly and would greatly appreciate any info, advice etc., on this part. Hopefully I can obtain all the bits and get it properly constructed.

Hi Tim.
Can't help personally, but there must be 10's of these in JCC members' stocks at the back of the shed, but all members aren't on JowettTalk.
If nothing is resolved on this site, then I suggest an advert in the Jowetteer mag. Copy deadline is 20th of the month prior to publication.
There again, perhaps J. C. Spares can help.
Regards,
Tony.

oil filter and another matter
Thanks for that Tony. I shall pursue things further!
You mention not all members using Jowett Talk, which of course they don't. But just imagine the level of information interchange, spares knowledge etc., etc., that there would be if most did use it. Reading Jowetteer seems to me to indicate a large 'gulf' between certain 'catagories' (if I dare use the term) of members. Any club is of course composed of many different types of people who have differing wants and needs, but a greater use by more of such a common and 'rapid response' medium has got to be better for the club and its ultimate aims.
Mike Chevers refers to an ageing club in his article in this months Jowetteer and I agree with what he says.
The Morris Minor Owners Club to which my son is a member has the most comprehensive, lively and constructive information interchange - it is remarkable! It enthuses my 16 year old and enhances his enjoyment of his 1957 Minor no end.
I would think it imperitive for the future of the Club that all 'leading lights' (starting at the top?), V.I.P.'s Section Leaders and the all important JCC Spares officers should all be comprehensively operating in the online sphere, and fully embracing and utilising the opportunities it provides.
The Jowetteer, Jowett Talk and Gallery need to operate almost as one body to push the club rapidly into the 21st. Century and the awareness of young potential enthusiasts.
At a visit to an event, I was dismayed after introducing myself to find that most (if not all) of the Jowett people seemed indifferent to my mention of Jowett Talk and Gallery.
Clubs rely heavily on a relatively few people who are commited and who work hard, some for many years, and we must all give them due praise and thanks, but they in turn must not think that they alone are the club.
Grow and evolve or atrophy and die.
A start would be if I got a response from one of the offices referred to above!
The club has a long history and I wish it a great future for all types and ages of people.

Hello again Tim,
What an excellent reply about Jowett matters on the Internet and the majority of members in the Club.
I'd think that our Hon. Ed. would publish your comments in the Jowetteer to elicit discussion if you'd send him a copy of your post.
Perhaps a little preface to the letter explaining its purpose would not go amiss.
Look forward to seeing your thoughts in print for the wider Jowett world to consider.
I've just remembered that it's the JCC Exec meeting at Thringstone this Saturday, so perhaps someone who's going to the meeting and also reading this might just mention it in A.O.B..
Best wishes,
Tony.

Air Filter
Hi Tim,
Firstly, I should like to echo your and Tony's comments about our excellent Club. I have found that several of us in Severnside are avid readers and contributors to Jowett Talk. It certainly keeps us encouraged.
Turning to your request for the oil bath filter, can I try and understand exactly what you need? There are the wood and metal parts that sit in the roof of the bonnet, plus the oil bath itself and then the 'trumpets' down to the carbs. Do you need all of this, or are some parts already on your car?
I can probably find most of these bits, if you need them.
All the best,
David

Hello.
In response to your post David re. the air filter. As I said I have little to go on, but I do appear to have the 'wooden bits' attached to the bonnet. What I don't have is the metal bath bit or its fixings nor the rubber 'bellows' to connect to the carb tubes. As I indicated before if I had a clear illustration or explode diagram or something I would know exactly what I do or do not have!!
Re. the club, Iam delighted to have had a positive constructive response so far. Your mention Tony that our Hon. Ed. would quite likely print my comments if I write him a letter is interesting - why isn't he online?, he could e-mail me, get a reply, edit the copy etc., all in no time! He could also monitor all chat, seek responses and permissions and link Jowetteer copy with what's being said in realtime!
Kind Regards to All!

Javelin Air Filter
This in the "for whatever it's worth category" from someone who no longer has a Javelin. Once you get your hands on the air filter assembly Tim, you may wish to consider doing what I did to replace the original (horsehair?) filter element. I fabricated a new element using layers of "Uni" air filter foam (I think there was one type that I used for the outer layer, and another inside). The foam was impregnated with air filter oil. (I can dig up more details if you are interested). It seemed to work very well.

Javelin air filter
I have posted pictures of my air filter in the Gallery. I tried once and the pictures were not there, I tried again and then realised that I ought to have a folder, so did that, couldn't move the pictures, so I added new ones into the folder. So, I have redundant pictures that I cannot delete.! Hope that this helps.
I think that the rubber pieaces are available from Jowett Spares.

Air Filter
Hi Tim,
Unfortunately, I am not confident that I could upload photos to Jowett Gallery, so I have sent you an e-mail with them attached.
Do have a look and see if this helps. As Robin says the rubber bits should be available from JCS and if not, then the longer bellows-type pipes might be similar to larger steering rack bellows. Do let me know if you need the black air filter box that I have as a spare, it's yours for the postage.
All the best,
David

Many thanks chaps.
Iam beginning to get a picture of whats what!
Thank you for the pictures David. Iam a bit busy at the moment, but as soon as I can apply myself to matters Javelin, I will contact you re. your kind offer.
Has anyone else modified theirs as Eric mentioned? Horsehair does seem a bit archaic!

Javelin air filter
Regarding Eric's filter medium change, I took his advice and changed mine. The horsehair went to the landfill. My photos on Jowett Gallery show the filter medium and there is picturesof the packaging with then maker's name. I understand that motor cyclists use this material for custom air filters.

Hi guys
Another useful product for filtering is the type used for filters in tropical fish tanks.
This is white in colour and allows good air flow whilst capturing the tiniest of particles. I also use it for the crankcase filters and in my parts washer.
A huge amount will not cost much and will last hundreds of years !

Dear Tim,
Bill Lock has the rubber bellows that are absolutely correct in stock.
New Zealand can supply the ferrules at the tops of the inlet pipes.
Someone must have a spare bonnet c/w air filter lying around?
I read earlier in this topic "Sunny Somerset" - well, fancy that from the wettest county in UK! Being an ex-Somerset resident (Clapton-in-Gordano), I know how wet Somerset can be - even in summer! If only we could have some of Somerset's rain down here.
Trust this nonsense helps,
Mike Allfrey.

To get good value from the JCC one can use a number of media to one's advantage. Some choose JTalk over all others; which may be as a preference or due to a restriction, such as time, distance etc. I often see questions laboured on JTalk which could be delt with in a few minutes at a Section meeting; so theese meetings can be good value when seeking advice and parts, especially when newly into the Jowett marque. So, for some non-attendees this is an opportunitiy lost. I see (earlier post in this item) that there is a misunderstanding that the Club Editor isn't on email; look inside the Jowetteer - on page two, where it is published each month. Indeed I send my humble contributions to him this way.
I hold that one gets any benefits from any Club in balance with what one contributes to it. A good example of this in the South West Section is the case of Alan Bartlett (see his many posts on the prewar section of JTalk). He has progressed from a condition of no knowledge at all, to a running prewar Car in 18 months, including sorting out a poor condition, poorly assembled engine!
On the topic of Club development and media: I publish below my part of my 'Chunk' for the October Jowetteer:
I am pleased to see some good ideas for how to develop the Club being discussed in the Jowetteer, and on the files of Jowett Talk (on the Club Website). I do wish some of the contributors to the website – who go to some time and trouble to express their views – don’t send their inputs to Alan Brierley. Alan is on email and will welcome your views. Whilst I realise that the Web is the emerging modern media, the Jowetteer reaches all of our members; both those with and without this facility. I should like very much for us to attract new and younger members than our current average. The first difficulty is who will volunteer to help? There is no shortage of ideas for what should be done, but there is a limited supply of those willing to put such ideas into action. Write to me, call me, leave me a message on Jowett Talk, or email to: Jowcars@talktalk.net I shall be pleased to hear from you; and perhaps see you at the AGM?
Let's get into gear! Geoff Wills
