Bradford Air Filter
As new only Bradford utilities (and maybe only those intended for export) were fitted with air filters. Does anyone have experience of sourcing and fitting a readily available air filter to a Bradford preferably retaining the "nose" casting?

the nose casting or 'horn' was introduced for 1935 model year to prevent long flames shooting out if the bugger backfired and so is a useful piece of kit to retain. The 'export' air filter mentioned breathes through only one side of the horn ( the other hole being blocked off by a sort of large penny washer. with the filter housing retaining bolt passing through it.)so this can be taken as providing sufficient volume under all circumstances
with this in mind any small diameter air filter housing with a carb stub of the same or slightly largerdiameter than the hole in the jowett horn should be able to be adapted by fitting a long bolt or threaded rod through the 'new'filter housing & passing through the horn in the same way as the export air filter & being similarly retained by a llarge penny washer. Can't remember which filter housings are of suitable diameter but Reliant 3 wheeler may suit & has the breathing capacity for 40bhp. Also some types of citroen 2cv may be of small enough diameter to fit under the bonnet .There will doubtless be many others!
another way is to creat a stub on the horn by soldering or otherwise attaching a bit of tube the diameter of the hole to a rim or big washer with as narrow as possible central crossbar. containing hole for through bolt - attachement of stub is then in same way i.e. with through bolt & penny washer on other side. A flexible pipe can then be taken to a suitable filter/silencer mounted possibly on the bulkhead
it may also be possible to glue a stub onto one side of the horn with araldite & a blanking plate on the other side.
These methods are completely reversible if originality needs to be restored.

Is the horn/filter tube/and filter hard to get in the UK?
Im sure if u contacted the NZ spare they could sort a 2nd hand one out for u.

Cleaning the orginal air filter...hand several that appeared never to have been cleaned in their life time...
I soaked in engine degreaser for a day or so
Washed with water
Blew almost dry with compressed air, then soaked in meths, blew dry again and left in the sun for a few hrs
Came up like new with good air flow.
