Scott and Keith Distance

Post by Forumadmin »

We travelled 3485 km or 2165 miles on our journey through England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria and Germany.
Our main issue was a vibration from the prop shaft which I had meant to fix before leaving, having fitted two Jubilee clips in preparation. We suffered the vibration which could be minimized by changing in and out of overdrive.

The vibration was considerably reduced on return using the vibration meter which showed reduction from well over 60 m/s to 25 m/s with the repositioning of the clips and the addition of two more. No doubt more testing could reduce this but it is now acceptable. Wish we had taken the hour before the trip to do this.

An inspection on the lift found a couple of loose nuts on the overdrive and the overdrive earth wire needing a few more strands.

The spark plug colours were all perfect and now all engine oil leaks seem cured, although there is still one from the front of the gearbox. We used 9 litres of oil on the trip.

Keith

I suspect you mean mm/s. Even so 25 mm/s to 60 mm/s is pretty serious.

Many companies would scrap/rebuild equipment with 5 mm/s

It is good however to be able to prove that adjustments are showing real measurable improvements. :D
Compliments of the Season,

Re: Reliving the Pirelli Marathon

Post by Forumadmin »

Thirty years ago I did the first Pirelli Marathon followed by four others, so with my Jupiter rebuilt after 50 years of ownership it was time to take 'Josephine' back to see how she now performed on the famous passes in the Alps and Dolomites.
The first Marathon went from London to Cortina and back visiting Spa, the Schlumpf collection at Mulhouse, Monza and then up across many passes including the mighty Stelvio, Falzarego and Tre Cime.
Our first stop was in Peer where a Jowett friend, Jaak Jacobs, organises a classic car gathering on a Thursday evening in the small town of Peer. Over three years this has built into a few hundred classic cars and 10000 people attending . Amazing. His two Jupiters and mine were displayed on a red carpet in front of the bandstand where a nine piece band played.
Image
Somehow the hood frame had fractured so we took it to a local truck body builder who welded it up.
Next stop was the Spa Francorchamps race circuit where Richard Gane was racing his Jupiter. We had organised to stay in an ancient forge on a farm in the depths of the Ardenne and travelled in every day. During this time the Jup did some serious off roading in an attempt to find a phone lost whilst out for a morning run.
Image
New club members, the Peeters, looking for ideas.
Image
On the Monday there was a long drive south, not following the main road all the way but taking in the Bonhomme pass into Colmar that I remember doing on a very snowy Monte Carlo rally. This dropped us down into the tourist village of Riquewihr for a taste of local wine.
Image
After a repeat visit to the Mulhouse car collection where this Simca that was beaten by the Jupiter in the 1950 Le Mans 24 Hours was displayed, we travelled right across Switzerland avoiding the motorway for most of the way and taking the ancient Kandersteg autorail through the Alps. Our destination was Boveno on Lago Maggiore where we had the most fantastic meal in Amélie's restaurant, that is after the Martini by the shore and the Gelati. The car which was covered in dust from our off road drive had been washed at the top of a Swiss pass using the water from an Alpine stream. It had to look good for those many Italians about to admire it!
Image
Then a winding road along the shores of Maggiore to the Monza race circuit where there was a Formula practice going on. Free entry and we got into the pits and to many places around the track. A great picture with Fangio and his Mercedes.
Image
This experience was followed by a couple of nights beside Lago Como and a visit to the Moto Guzzi museum. We gave the car a service here, as it was well over its 500 mile service interval, whilst fitting a replacement tube to a leaking tyre.

The Google map route
Image
Approaching the Stelvio from St Moritz was less crowded than the two other ways up and I enjoyed the many hairpins. I remembered the various incidents that took place on the few rallies I did that incorporated the pass.
Image
A stay in Merano and then a visit to the Iceman museum in Bolzano before tackling the sequence of passes in Cortina. There were some great narrow uncrowded roads to enjoy the car. and some eye watering views along the way.
Image
Image
Image
Cortina has changed so much since I was there with most of the old buildings replaced with high class shops. But my dream of doing the Tre Cime again materialised on a day when the weather could not have been better. It is now quite a busy tourist drive on a toll road so only occasional chances to have a spirited climb.

The Google map route

The drive up to Innsbruck was mostly via the old road rather than the new motorway that carves its way up the valley. We had an AirBNB right in the centre of the old town on the World Championship Cycling Route so, since the roads were closed most of the day, the Jupiter stayed in the underground car park. These closures also caused us to miss the 4 other Jowetts that had come in on the Autorail from Dusseldorf, They had a police escort out of the city and bypassed us waiting at a petrol station. Never mind this gave me a chance to relive my trip over the Arlberg pass in a Mini van with summer tyres during Christmas 1966. We had slept in the van at minus 20 deg C overnight and were awoken by the snow plough which we followed up the pass to see cars trapped for 6 weeks under 3m of snow.
Image
Image
Then some more off roading as we tried to find our way out of Austria and into Switzerland to join the rest of the Jowetts for the rally in Arbon.
Image
Amy, the vice chairman of the Jowett Car Club, exhilarating the cheese makers we visited.

The return trip narative to follow.
