Oil Cooler For Sale Anyone?

Post by jginsberg »

Greetings.....Working on a Jupiter restoration out here in California and looking to see if anyone might have a spare oil cooler hanging around, wishing it were connected up to some motor...longing for that taste of oil again. Thanks in advance for considering!..JG

I gave my/Amy's Bowman cooler to Roger in North CA only last month. Personally I fit a modern one above the gearbox but many others have fitted them below distributor. I have a few original ones which fitted stradling the fan shaft, but would not fit them because of reliability issues.

Yeah....I have been in touch with Roger. I am thinking to mount the cooler below the distributor cap as well.

Many are available such as https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/mocal-o ... rs-245479/ in the UK.
I would also fit a thermostat such as https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/mocal-oil-stat-245484/
Personally I find fitting in front of the engine is not a good place as it is in the way and there is not much room. You can also fit a larger one on the bulkhead.

Well I hope you start enjoying the mountains in the Jup just like Scott and I did last month in mine.

Keith,
I am interested in your comment about installing your oil cooler above the gearbox; do you mean gearbox or the flywheel housing, and can you post a photo of the installation?

With the standard Jupiter as it is, it is too easy for the air to bypass the radiator altogether by going down below it and over the engine/flywheel housing, so there is a case to be made for mounting an oil cooler radiator immediately below the coolant radiator so long as the gear change linkage can be avoided. In an ideal world, the two radiators would be integrated into one robust assembly.

Looking upwards past rear of gearbox by speedo take out.
This location gets the full force of the air being driven down the bulkhead. It does not clog up with flies or muck. It allows a large cooler to be fitted.
Ii is out of the way and can stay there during engine or gearbox removal. It has survived unblemished through special rally stages on stoney roads in the Welsh forests when the underside of the car was blasted to shiny metal, Bedouin kids putting rocks in the middle of the road in the Sahara and has been there for 25 years.
Oil thermostat can be fitted anywhere but this is my location, just behind distributor gives short return during warm up.

Note oil temp sensor in oil banjo bolt.
With oil temp in sump , combined with temp sensors in each head and water temp sensor in header tank, give a good idea of what is going on.

Thanks Keith,
So it looks like the oil cooler is attached to the body rather than the chassis. I have my Mocal oil cooler and thermostat which I had on my Javelin 45 years ago and am trying to decide how to mount it on the Jupiter (#877), hence my interest in your solution.
