Doe anyone know the correct way to check the engine oil level on the 10/4 . I have read two conflicting ways ,one says to have 1in showing on the float level ,the other says a minimum of 1in and a max of 2.5 in
I don't want to overfill so your thoughts would be appreciated

Nigel,
From the JC ltd.1935-39. Maintenance handbook. Never allow the float needle to drop below 1" above the top of the brass tube. No mention of a maximum level.

Hi Nigel,
Don't know about the 10/4 but for the '30s 7hp the handbook states that the crankcase is full when the level indicator ceases to rise! From experience I can safely say it makes sense on the '30s 7, however, on the vintage it says exactly the same but if you were to fill up to that level it would be way over the 3 pints needed. What does it say in the handbook?

Re: 10/4 engine oil level
I did a drawing and explanation of how the 7hp engine oil level indicator works:-

Don't know anything about 10/4s, but they may be similar.
Don't overfill though.
Tony.

I have a copy of the 21st edition of the Instruction Book.
On page 7, under 'Useful Data' it says: -
Engine sump "Four" (cylinder - 10hp) = 7pts'.
On page 23 it also states "During the running in period, never allow the needle to drop below 1in. above the top of the brass tube. For normal conditions, however, 1/2" of wire showing is a safe minimum level".
I hope this helps.
