Hi David,
If you are considering an engine rebuild ( and I guess this is either for a Jupiter or Javelin? ) then can I suggest you have a chat with John Airey before you start?
There are several areas to consider before spending lots of money! The potential block should be initially pressure tested for hidden cracks, even after it passes a visual examination. We experience a 'pass' rate of around 15%! The crankshaft needs to have a 'Speedy Sleeve' fitted to the rear oil seal face after grinding, any potential set of blocks need to be assessed for correct matching for the front and rear oil seals, once the front timing case and bell housing are fitted, the rear timing case cover needs to selected to be a good fit to the crankcase faces and, ideally, the internal oilways need to be brought up to Series 3 standards, along with the latest Series 3 oil pump. I haven't even mentioned pistons and heads, but beware anything that has been shaved or messed-with over the 70 odd years since it left the factory. Ideally too, the reground crankshaft needs to be balanced with the flywheel and clutch. Don't forget too that the rear main bearing shells will have wider 'shoulders' if fitting an oversize and the crankshaft needs to be ground-out to fit. Hurley Enginering Services in Bath do a smashing job on crankshafts and even have the Jowett data books under the counter!
I suspect a lot of selection of matching parts was done by the factory, where they probably had plenty of spares to 'mix and match'.
There is a lot of experience in the Club and I wish you every success!

Thanks very helful and I shall look up the people suggested.
I see there is a newly made case for sale in the Jowetteer..I may have to go that route..but have heard some machining may be needed.
Can anyone comment?
Kind regards
David

Drummond Black and Richard Gane are experienced on sorting the new blocks.
And have a look at the Josephine rebuild thread. Most engine refurb operations are covered. And at theMichael Allfrey Tech Notes for expansion on the Maintenance Manual.
