Filter King installation?
Hi chaps, Has anybody fitted a Filter King onto a Jupiter? If so where did you mount it and what pressure should it be set to deliver to standard VM5 carbs?
Thanks in anticipation for your responses.

Yes after petrol pump next to filter. Cut pipe and inserted two rubber hoses. Pressure between 1 and 2 bar. Maybe a pic in the SC rebuild.

Re: Filter King installation?
Thanks Keith. Only pic I could find was one with only a standard inline bowl filter on a chassis shot.
I presume then that your large Filter King unit went under the floor? Was wondering then how you screwed in the pressure gauge from the top, to check pressure. Only way I can see if it goes under the floor, is to cut a removable and replaceable access panel in the floor to put in and take out the gauge?
Regards, G.

Re: Filter King installation?
Ah! Thanks for the shot of yours. Now I understand where my confusion is coming from.
Shot enclosed of the Filter King unit I want to install? - totally different, so it won’t fit as the unit you have. I’m surprised that nobody has tried one of these units on a Jup to date, maybe it’s because there is no obvious simple location.

Re: Filter King installation?
I have a glass bowl Filter King, from memory much like the one illustrated on the red carton, mounted immediately before the fuel pump. No photo I'm afraid and I'm not near the car at the moment. Sorry.

Re: Filter King installation?
Thanks for the response. That’s interesting, “before the fuel pump”. I would have thought it was more likely to be after the pump. If only because the Filter King allows us to regulate the fuel pressure, which is the main reason I want to fit it, apart from the fact that I never fitted a filter when I restored it over 20 years ago! So it’s been on my to do list for a long time.
The instructions say mount away from heat and engine vibration. So I thought repiping the fuel runs and putting it on the scuttle was a non starter on a Jup, with under bonnet heat build up. Hence my original query to see if anybody had done it successfully.
I think it’s going to have to be fitted under the driver side floor, after the pump, with small access holes made for the pressure gauge and adjuster screw to set it. (I guess the ultimate belt and braces would be to have the standard glass bowl small filter before the pump as well)
I did see one fitted on the scuttle of a racing Triumph GT6 and that performed well, but I guess despite racing temps, he didn’t have the issues we have with Jupiter fuel evaporation under bonnet.

Definitely away from heat. On the Alaska trip we had an issue where the fuel pump was heated by radiant heat from exhaust causing vapourisation.

Re: Filter King installation?
Sorry, I should have been clearer. Whilst the filter king is placed to the rear of the fuel pump, by cunning routing of the pipe work, it remains downstream of the pump from a plumbing perspective. Does that make sense?

Re: Filter King installation?
Drummond has made the point that crap in the fuel can cause failure of the pump. So a filter BEFORE the pump is a good idea, particularly with electronic (solid state) pumps. Obviously the pressure regulator needs to be after the pump.

Re: Filter King installation?
Yes I get pipe routing, behind the pump but after pump output!
Thanks for your advice chaps. I will let you know in due course how I get on with this.

Re: Filter King installation?
I don't think there would be any advantage in fitting a fuel pressure regulatir such as this, provided, with Zenith carbs, the delivery pressure is below 2.5 psi max.
I replaced 114's front mounted pump (very prone to vaporisation with eurocrap petrol) with a rear mounted pump more or less in the position used in the later cars. Important thing was to pick a pump of the correct output designed for use in this sort of position. Pump selected was a German Hardy unit, their model specified for early model MGA's. (SU from Burlen or simillar would be fine also ). Initially I fitted an inline regulator (Filter King without the filter part), but removed it after a time as it was completely unnecessary with this pump.

Re: Filter King installation?
For those of you who were interested in my Filter King request, I enclose a shot of the final installation.
It’s the best shot I can get, but you will see the chassis and the sill, with the pump bracket. The unit is hidden in front of the pump bracket, close to the sill and attached to the floor. Two holes are drilled in the floor (with rubber bungs to fill when not needed) to put in the gauge to measure pressure and make the adjustment.
It fits in well, and it’s easy to check the filter, adjust and check.
With this fitted, presure reset and electronic ignition instead of the points and condenser, it’s a different car.

Re: Filter King installation?
I sort of went about this in a different manner. I used a CAV Delphi diesel fuel filter with a glass water trap. This was installed on the front face of the scuttle dash (firewall) and used rubber fuel hose to connect. In addition to that, I installed, after the filter, a petrol pressure limiter set at 1.5 to 2 psi. I think that 1 to 2 bar would be too high, as described earlier. The pressure regulator came from Italy and is a well finished device.

Re: Filter King installation?
Sorry, I forgot to mention that currently my CAV filter is downstream of the SU pump. It is my intention when my Jupiter gets its new petrol tank, that the filter will be mounted before the pump.
Some years ago, I bought a replica SU pump from Holden Vintage & Classic. It is electronic and makes all the right noises. At the inlet side of the pump there is a very fine gauze strainer, from which I have cleared a good amount of 'muck' a few times. The SU pump is a pusher type and it is negative to earth. I use an alternator and an electronic rev counter.
To me, the SU pump was a real bargain!
