I know of this car as it used to 'live' near me in Eastbourne. I think you might live in Teignmouth?

It is a 1937 Jowett Jason and is quite rare. The chassis number should start with a '7' followed by the build number. The engine number might also be the same.

I believe it needs attention to the gearbox and possibly the freewheel device, but don't let that worry you! You will find plenty of advice (and just possibly some assistance!) here.

Welcome to the Forum, there will be a number of members watching this 'post' so it is very likely that there will be more information available soon.

I have also sent you a PM (personal message).

Regards, Ian Howell

Ian - Are you sure that this is a 'Jason' - I was on the understanding that only 2 known Jason's survive - one with Tim Brown and other is with the collection at Bradford Industrial History Museum

Chris (and Nigel): -

I collated this information from previouis entries in Jowetteer, but I DO live near John, I HAVE spoken to him about this car and its condition, but I CANNOT confirm the actual model as I have not ever actually SEEN the car. I know that John said it had a 4 cylinder engine and that there was a freewheel device that needed attention.

I can only ass_u_me (and we all know what THAT means!) that the model information was entered in the Register by a previous owner - possibly John, probably not - but now we know where it is we should be able to make aa positive identification of the model.

Wouldn't it be great if it IS another Jason? That fiercely sloping radiator should help!

The chassis number should? start with a '6' for the 1936 build year, but this might even be a '5' as the cars were introduced at the 1935 Motor Show. I wonder if any were made in '37?

This is all part of the fun of Jowetteering isn't it?

I have now searched the internet for a picture of a Jason ,mine is different to this as it has steel wheels not wire and the radiator is more upright .Just come back from the first run out of approx 25 miles as the speedo cable is broken I can't be exact and all was fine apart from a leak from the top of the fuel tank ,I am not too worried about this as it stopped leaking after 2 miles
I purchased this car knowing that I would find problems and also knew of problems ,all in all I am delighted with the car

All in all - good news! Pity is isn't a Jason though. I am sure you will have a lot of fun with the car, the extra power of the four cylinder engine makes these cars a more practical vehicle on today's roads.

These are still very rare models - much moreso than the Javelins and I think you will find a lot of interest from visitors to shows and even the general public if you find yourself out and about or parked up in the street. I have on more than one occasion found a quiet spot to contemplate nature and the meaning of life, only to be pleasantly interrupted by someone stopping to say 'Oh, a Jowett . . ' and then launching into detailed family histories, some of which MIGHT lead on to interesting developments. You never know . . .

Speedo cable? Minor problem. Try Bill Lock.

Freewheel? The late Ian Priestley told me, when I asked about restoring the Humphrey Sandberg unit on my car, 'They are suicidal'. He pointed out that if you neglected to disconnect the freewheel BEFORE going down a prolonged or steep downhill stretch, then you could not use the engine as a brake and the car tended to 'run away' with only? the brakes to avoid disaster!

Quite simple really. Have the image displayed in the Jowett Gallery. For small images like this one you can right click on it and choose 'copy image address'.
Then, in your post, click on the Img button and paste the image address link between the opening and closing image BBcode.
