G'dday Folks,
Our roads have become so rough lately that the front bonnet catch knobs tend to defy gravity and unscrew themselves. Last October on a short run, the L.H.S. knob came off and was lost. This was one of the new ones from J.O.A.C., in stainless steel. As a result, I am wondering how Jupiter owners go about securing the catch knobs?
I did use a pair of internal tooth washers, but they tended to 'mill' away the brass shanks of the original brass knobs, hence the stainless steel pair. However, with modern Chinese-made washers, there was no retaining effect against the stainless steel shanks at all. I do not tighten them down too much, to avoid distortion at the bonnet's front cross member.
My first fix attempt was to raise the lower portion of the catch assembly by 8 mm, so that more thread would be engaged. The knobs were screwed home against fibre washers this time, but they still come loose, even with those modifications!
As a trial, I threaded 5/16" Whitworth nuts onto the catch rods first, tightened them to my normal bonnet securing tension and then, holding the nut with an open-end spanner, tightened the knobs down firmly against the jam-nuts. They are still holding after a 40 mile country trip.
It is my intention to make up a special three prong 'spanner' to hold the knob firmly while the jam nuts are tightened. The three prongs, with shrink-wrap on them, will locate in the notches in the chromed knobs' larger diameter. It is also my intention to drill and tap a pair of 1/4" brass nuts to match the 5/16" Whitworth thread. The reason for the smaller, across the flats nuts is to match the shank diameter of the knobs. Also, brass will not rust!
Our State of Victoria (OZ) now has roads that have deteriorated to the level of Algerian donkey tracks. However, I think my modification will endure tightly over those tracks. There is a bit of Land Rover in many British cars!
All the best,
Mike A.

Re: Jupiter Front Bonnet Catches
Over the years I have had some unscrew. Threadlock is probably the best solution unless some sort of circlip solution could be designed.
