Digital multimeter

Post by Tony Fearn »

I was in Lidl today, and they have these at about £10.
KC is always going on about them, so they must be useful.
I wouldn't know how to use one, so didn't buy, but perhaps you understand the technology.
Tony.

Hello Tony,

Handy little thing to have. With next to no expertise you can find out if a car is charging or not. Very easy to prove if a fuse has gone or if your earth is good or bad. For a tenner give it a go. That is unless Hilary is going to come after me with something big and heavy; in that case save your money :D

Hi all,

Yes, a digital multimeter for £10 is great value. The good points are that they are pretty accurate and often have a continuity tester built-in, with an audio 'bleep' when detecting a short circuit. Very useful when working single-handed and checking wiring.

There is a slight downside. Our cars have rather 'dirty' electrics when the engine is running, with a lot of 'spiky' AC imposed on the nominal 12v DC. The old analogue meters didn't really mind and smoothed this out to give what appeared to be a steady reading. With a digital meter, they respond so well, this rough DC can give you false readings if the engine is running, so be aware.

Good value at £10 though!

All the best,

David
