Advertising Jowetts
I have just been looking at the on-line catalogues of various auction houses that specialise in, or include, motoring memorabilia in their remits.
I am sure we are all aware of Noel Stokoe's excellent book of the Jowett adverts that appeared in the trade and other press all those years ago, but was there any other material produced?
I recall there was an illuminated oval JOWETT sign at - I think -the Wakefield Centenary rally, but apart from that, and the signwriting on the showrooms of Torquay Motors that I spotted back in the early 70's I have never seen any official signs like those enamel signs advertising Austin, Morris et al (whoever Al is).
Does anyone have any such signs or even photographs of such items? I think we might all benefit if this type of item could be added to Jowett Shop stock, even if only a reproduction.
Any thoughts?

Re: Advertising Jowetts
Ian - the Austin 7 people have reproduced some beautiful enamel signs copied from period originals. They were shown on the A7 Friends forum, but since they have recently changed website platform I can't find the link anymore. From memory they weren't cheap -around £150-£200 I think. I've never seen a Jowett enamel sign, but doubtless they existed.
There was a poster in a recent auction (Richard Edmonds, I think) which was supposedly published to advertise the Le Mans victory. The estimate wasn't all that high, but I didn't fancy the trip to Chippenham to bid.
Regarding brochures and the like, there was recently a large selection of vintage/pre-war items sold on ebay. I bought a vintage lubrication chart, but my favorite was a sales brochure for the Jackson-Jowett: essentially a sports body on a short 2 chassis. It was too expensive for me!

Re: Advertising Jowetts
Gents,
I know of two Enamel signs stating that the owner is a Jowett agent. I have found a company that makes enamel signs, but have yet to persuade either of the owners to lend one to the manufacturer. We need to make a note that if there are only the two (I doubt it, there will be more) then if more are made then it devalues the two originals.

I would have thought in these days of technology a photo of the original would be sufficient to reproduce it, so there would be no risk of damage.

Re: Advertising Jowetts
Well now!
It appears that these things did/do exist and therefore there is the possibility of producing copies, which I am sure would be favourably received - at the right price of course!
With regard to devaluing the originals, surely the several dozen copies of the Mona Lisa have not devalued the original?!
Seriously, originals are just that and reproductions - however accurate - can only be copies.
I have been considering doing something based on the logos on the brake and clutch pedals of my 1930 car, which have 'Light JOWETT Cars'
(in that order and in script) cast into the workinmg face. Mine are quite badly worn but miracles can be worked with computer enhancement.
Let's see if this correspondence strikes any chords with others . . .

At Peebles there were laser cut Jowett script signs available. I bought one, painted it and is now on front of garage door.

Were they all sold?

And to use a well-used Scottish phrase.....HOW MUCH?!!
Tony.

If there were any left - or if there is a further demand - can we have a picture (with a ruler for scale) and of course THE PRICE!

Re: Advertising Jowetts
Hi In, many thanks for your kind comments regarding my "Jowett - Advertising the Marque book, I am grateful to you.
I also missed seeing the Jowett scrips that were being sold in the marquee at Peebles!
Over the years I have often seen signs for LAND ROVER Parking Only, or RILEY Parking Only etc, and thought a similar one for JOWETT Parking Only would be a good idea, but I am not sure who produces them. With a membership of 600 or so, I would have thought they would sell reasonably well?
If anybody knows who produces them, please could you let me know, and I will contact them....
Best wishes, Noel

Noel: - No offence taken!
Re; _ Jowett Parking, surely MOST of OUR Jowetts are safely tucked up in nice warm sheds and garages rather than suffering the indignity of being merely parked. Except of course when out in the world showing them what they have missed!
Chris: - Will these be radiator or rear wing scripts? I was thinking more along the lines of the enamel signs for Woodbines or Fry's chocolate!
(Well they were popular when I was lad).
